Personality trait: Perseverance Symbol/visual: Lotus Flower Salva is a naturally persevering person. When Salva was walking across the vast desert trying to escape the war, he never gave up. The entire time, while the sun was beating down, he was still walking. The author explains, “Each time, Salva would think of his family and his village, and he was somehow able to keep his wounded feet moving. One painful step at a time.” (Park 54). Even though Salva was in pain, he continued to walk. He knew that if he kept moving forward, he would eventually reach his family. To represent Salva’s persistence, we decided to draw a lotus flower. When Salva is trying to escape the Civil War and find his family, he tries to cross the desert. The author of “A Long Walk to Water,” writes, “Salva had never been so hungry. He stumbled along, somehow moving one foot in front of the other, not noticing the ground he walked on, or the forest around him, or the light in the sky. Nothing was real except his hunger.” (Park 23). Salva was completely dehydrated, unable to focus or do anything else except hope that water would come to him. You need to provide background information on the scene. For a while, the two tribes have been enemies because they both fought over the same land due to the fact that it had rich water. The author states,”He has drilled many wells for his people. This year, he decided to drill for Neur as well” (Park 115). Although the Neur are Salva’s tribe's enemy, he still helped them with drilling holes and creating wells. To show this act of peace, we decided to draw a broken heart with a bandaid. The broken heart represents the dispute between the two tribes over the years. On the other hand, the band aid represents Salva uniting the two tribes, and the peaceful era that follows. Salva bringing the wells to the Nuer united the tribes
