Big companies do not want to provide basic healthcare to their employees because it costs around $10,880 per family. In a study it was found that Americans found the price of healthcare more important than the economy and gas prices, but because of the hefty price, 46 million people in the U.S. do not have health insurance. Lou Dobbs states “ The U.S. is one of the only industrialized nations that doesn't provide healthcare to all of its citizens, yet we still spend more on it than any other country”(173). The expense of healthcare is problematic for many people, especially since many personal bankruptcies filed in the United States are from out-of-control payments for health care and treatment, like cancer patients who face out of pocket expenses of 35 thousand dollars. Some presidents have tried to address the healthcare problem like President Truman, who proposed a health insurance plan and President Nixon, who planned to establish national health insurance, but only President Johnson achieved any degree of success when he expanded coverage through Medicare and Medicaid. President Clinton also tried to fix the healthcare system, but his efforts almost ended his presidency. How can anyone be okay with this healthcare issue?
