Louis Allen's Murder Case
Louis Allen was shot in 1964. These are the events that lead up to his murder.Louis Allen was a farmer in Liberty, Mississippi died on January 31,1964. ¨Allen's namesake grandson, Louis Allen Jr., said family members suspect the killer is alive and that other people were involved¨(Joyner). Allen was murdered for witnessing the murder of Herbert Lee. Allen´s family and the FBI have been looking for the murderer for fifty-four years and haven’t found them. Herbert Lee was born in Amite County MS. Lee was a successful and illiterate dairy farmer. he had served in world war two and had family. On September 25,1961 Allen witnessed the murder of Civil rights activist Herbert Lee by state legislator E.H. Hurst. Allen falsely testified that Hurst killed Lee in self defence under the threat of being killed. In August of 1962 Allen and two other men are registering to vote. Someone takes a shot at them when they turned away. A white business man tells Allen that the best thing that he can do is to leave his house and family to keep them safe. Finally Allen tells his friends and civil rights activist that the reason that Hurst killed Lee because Lee was registering African Americans to vote. Allen receives death threats and boycotts to his timber business. On September 1962 Deputy Sheriff Jones arrest Allen on phony charges of interfering with a police officer. Jones beats Allen, and breaks his jaw. In November 1963 Jones Arrested Allen again for a bounced check and concealed weapon.¨After Allen’s “FBI statement about the Herbert Lee murder, his associates and family members were subjected to severe harassment. On February 21,1963, Leo McKnight, his wife, pregnant daughter, and son-in-law perished in a house fire. McKnight had been an employee of Allen’s, and allegedly he was warned by Jones to stay away from him. The fire may, some suspect, have been related to Jones’ vendetta against Allen.
