Louis George ran a bakery downtown. Everyday Raven went down their and collected a loaf of brown bread, a loaf of white bread and two iced buns (the master's favourite) all as part of her daily errands. Sometimes she would get herself some muffins too (her favourite as long as they had blueberries in!) Next she would go to the local greengrocers. There she had to get carrots and potatoes. She wasn't sure why but she got them anyway. Her friend Ruth and her mum ran there and sometimes she would get the potatoes or carrots free. Afterwards, her and Ruth would go to Mrs Nelly's Sweet Shoppe. Mrs Nelly was a kind lady with rosy cheeks, short, chocolate brown hair and always wearing a lacy, ivory bonnet. Most of the time she wore a salmon pink

She loved to emphasize her femininity by wearing dresses while she hunted. She sewed and cooked just like she was expected too, which she loved, but she loved to get down and dirty in the meantime. She loved to hunt and identify plants and see the outside world, all while looking “proper”.…

Desperate loss and hopelessness fill so many homes. It is all too common to hear about a father walking out the door, a mother broken and defeated, and the children suffering through it all in fear and abandonment. Feelings such as these are found in Jim Stevens' poem "Schizophrenia." The poem shows the conflicts that exist within the house. However, the crisis that the family is experiencing is not expressed directly, but indirectly, through the house. By personifying the house in every aspect, "Schizophrenia" reveals the family's relationships, or lack there of.…

She also gave them socks and potatoes along with oatmeal after letting them sleep over for one day. Usually the kindness extended to one night of lodging and one meal. However Josh was housed by Lonnie for an extended time or else he would have died from an aggressive strain of the flu. Another act of kindness was when Joey got a full loaf of bread from a stranger. And another when Josh and Joey got a job from Ms. Arthur which helped at home. Still another was when Lonnie drove the two boys to a circus to get a job and help them work for $20. Which later helped them buy food, medicine and shoes. People’s good side was shown during The Great Depression, but people's bad side did too.…

He was lovely, he had brown eyes and a lovely nature, and I loved him very much. As it was cold in Melbourne, Josephine gave me a lovely white fur coat. As it was soft and warm I wore it every day, but everywhere I went men wanted me to sleep with me. You see, in my innocence, I didn’t know that a white fur coat was the colour prostitutes wore to solicit work. As Josephine knew I wouldn’t be aware of this, maybe it was a mild form of get-back for all those years of misery I gave her.…
