He had some success writing short stories and magazine stories and after World War II he started writing novels. In the 1950s his novels began to sell and Hollywood took noticed. His first novel to be made into a screen play was Hondo starring John Wayne. He eventually wrote
100 novels, 250 short stories, and sold more than 320 million copies.
His novels and stories are fact based, if not the characters, then the locations. Meticulous research and descriptions give his stories an almost historical text book quality, and the non-stop action and suspense keep the reader interested. The lead characters are always hard working, with strong moral convictions that somehow always find themselves in a situation that requires them him to help others in need.
His books demonstrate strong, old fashioned American values and morality that made this country great.
