Love Armed Poem
To be scorned in love is something that most everyone will face. There are those that place blame on the lover, and then there are those that place blame on love itself. The narrator of Love Armed places the blame on both. The verse is written for a lover that does not reciprocate the narrator’s affections. The title produces an image before the poem has even started. Love Armed, a larger-than-life figure sits, surrounded by weapons as though to protect itself from the pain and heartbreak that love can cause. It is a well-known fact that love giveth and love taketh away. To give effect to what love seizes from those who feel it, Love has been personified. The phrase ‘Fantastic Triumph’ implies that Love takes great pleasure in the suffering he causes those under his reign. Love is not someone to be admired, for he is a sadistic ruler of those who wish to feel his gentle caress. Instead, he creates ‘Fresh pains’ for those ‘Bleeding Hearts’. The term ‘Bleeding Hearts’ is a potentially perplexing …show more content…
Love is often described as blind or selfish and it seems as though Love obtains other characteristics through those around himself. Love is proud and cruel, because the narrator’s lover is proud and cruel. In contrast, Love takes ‘sighs and tears’ from the narrator, because at this point, it is all she has left to offer. She is still mourning the loss of her lover, or perhaps just the relationship, but it is made clear that the lover is not. Humanity raises Love up to the level of a god. Love is the be-all, end-all of life, it is the ultimate goal, it is the closest thing we have to magic. We talk of true love, how a single kiss can break any curse. The narrator has come to the realisation that this isn’t the case. The winners of life are those who escape love, unscathed. The lover has won, because she is the only one who is broken

After reading the two short stories, Love in L.A by Dagoberto Gilb and What We Talk about When We Talk about Love by Raymond Carver, I have realized that a common feeling like ‘love’ can be painted into so many different pictures. Each one of these short stories is written by two different authors and sees ‘love’ at different angles. The character Jake in Love in L.A. has this vision of love that is more of a mockery. Then, Terri’s ex-husband in What We talk about When We Talk about Love has so much passion, but the kind of passion that can be interoperated as obsession. The lies and misconceptions of ‘love’ that Jake and Terri’s ex-husband display reveal that ‘love’ does not exist in a world filled with nothing but cruelty and evil actions.…

The Lais of Marie de France are a collection of short stories that depict situations where love arises. The author presents love as a complex emotion and demonizes it and praises it in certain instances. She is not always in favor of love as is described by the outcomes by some of the lovers in the story, such as when they either end up dead in the end or banished because of their love. The author presents this notion of love because she believes it is not always justified to love someone. In the book, two distinct types of love are shown. There is selfless love and selfish love which are compared throughout the multiple stories in The Lais of Marie de France. By comparing the two distinct types of love, a universal truth about love can be derived to explain when love is and is not justified.…

In A.B Yehoshua’s novel,The Lover, a chain of first person monologues are described. These monologues are set up in a mixture of flashbacks and conflicts that the characters undergo. This unique structure gives the novel a special meaning towards its description of the characters, and the story itself. For example, the character Asya is described to be a very hardworking independent woman. But, she has a odd relationship with her husband, Adam, who is a diligent man in charge of a successful mechanics garage. Throughout the story Adam and Asya never, hug never kiss, and they barley speak to one another. Meaning that this structure lets The Lover symbolize the loneliness and insufficient amount of recognition towards each of the characters. For instance, Daffi, the daughter of Asya and Adam, is a teenage girl in lack of attention. So, because of her parents barely paying any type of attention to her, she spends her time wandering the streets most of the day trying to keep herself productive by either stalking people or just walking around. After awhile, she then begins to connect with her fathers worker, Na’im, who also is alone and has no attention from anyone, and in the end they both fall in love. This basically shows how this novel details the meaning of loneliness and the importance of love.…

The last paragraph at the same time also represents the prose as a whole: the life lesson, exploration, and emotion of love. The readers learn that one cannot trust anyone and can only trust oneself, as supported by the sentence “we are utterly open with no one”. Furthermore, the listing of “not mother and father, not wife or husband, not lover, not child, not friend” emphasizes that not even the closest person can be trusted, and that one can only trust one’s heart. Another life lesson is shown in “when young we think there will come one person who will savor and sustain us always”, meaning that when ones are all young, ones always believe in true love and the live-happily-ever-after stereotype, but in the end ones come to a realization that hearts can easily break in reality, and that true love may just be a fantasy. House metaphor is also presented by the “brick up” in the “you can brick up your heart as stout and tight and hard and cold and impregnable as you possibly can and down it comes in an instant”, and illustrating that even the strongest hearts can break, which is further justified by the run-on sentence using the repeated “and”s. The author then visualized some examples of emotion of love in the end to stimulate, engage, and communicate with the readers that the heart, a well-accepted common metaphor for emotion, reminds the readers of its…

“Keep love in your hearts. A life without it is like a sunless garden when the flowers are dead.”-Oscar Wilde Wilde hints at, that without love, your heart is like dead flowers in a sunless garden. Whereas, if there is love in your heart, your garden is full of blooming flowers. Love is a strong connection between people or objects that means a lot to them. In “Death and Transfiguration of a Teacher” Solari expresses the love between money and poetry. However, “The Handsomest Drowned Man in the World” portrays love between two unique people. In the stories “The Handsomest Drowned Man in the World” and “Death and Transfiguration” both Gabriel Garcia Marquez and Maria Teresa Solari embody love as a metaphor throughout the story.…

The power of love causes individuals to react in many different ways. In the Lais of Marie de France, each story of love produces a different outcome. For a story’s relationship, whether it involves lovers, siblings, or parents and children, there is one similarity hidden beneath the facades that make up each story; love. Throughout many of the tales, the protagonists succumb to the pain of love and the disappointments that may come along with it. In the “Lai of Milun”, the characters suffer greatly in hopes of one day achieving a fulfilled relationship, but their perseverance is rewarded in the end. Although Milun and his mistress…

In recent discussions of love and hate, a controversial issue has been presented: can true love conquer all adversity? On one hand, some argue that love has its limitation. From this perspective, many will claim that familial love cannot conquer a violent home with a violent father. On the other hand, however, others argue that love can conquer any obstacle that appears in a relationship, whether material or natural. In the words of one of this view’s main proponents, “Come live with me and be my love, and we will all the pleasures prove that valleys, groves, hills, and fields, woods, or steepy mountain yields (Marlowe 777).” According to this view, love is enough to move mountains. In sum, this issue is whether love can conquer all adversity or if love has its limitations that cannot be overcome.…

The story occurs at a non-specified time and in a “kingdom by the sea,” which connotes a fairytale and royal setting (2). The narrator’s love is special. The poem describes his anger and obsession to find an answer for her death, which makes him lose perspective in life. After he answers his question, he realizes that their love is not over yet because their “souls” are intertwined (32). Their love is eternal because the narrator believes that his love continues after death.…
