Caroline Ann Duffy had made it a common opinion in her writing that she believes love is a crawl thing. However in both “Hour” and “Quick Draw”, she talks about love in an appreciative way. Although in the two poems, it has two very different circumstances in a relationship.
Similarly both poems, is themed around a relationship, however the differences being that Hour describes the situation with a vast amount of imagery and seems to be a testament to the couples love for each other. Lines such as “For thousand of seconds we kiss...”are used to excaudate and exhibit, the bond the couple share. Quick draw also uses imagery but for a different purpose, the purpose being an expression of the characters animosity toward the other half. It uses lines such as “your voice a pellet in my ear, and hear me grown” to express the anguish caused by the caller, it almost tries to make the reader commiserate with the character. Personally I see the poems to be two different points in a relationship, Hour being the short period at the beginning where things are perfect, but Quick draw being the painful breakup.
Throughout both poems they make comparisons to some sort of story or situation. Hour constantly makes links from fairytales such as Rumble Stiltskin, the purpose of this being to recognise that this doesn’t actually happen in real life. Quotes such as “gold, gold, gold, from straw” can show that link. Quick draw compares the painful brake up to a western shooting, from this we can surmise that the writer wants to portray the experience to being agonizing. This quote from the first paragraph makes the comparison clear; “..the mobile and the landline phones, like guns...”. Both of these back up the common feeling about Carol Ann Duffy’s writing opposing the concept of love.
Another point I recognised in the poems, is that they use different language to tell the story. Hour uses
