the government system. However, when she goes to open the profile of Xander in the micro card, she sees somebody else's photo on it rather than Xander’s. Later she chooses hiking as her leisure activity where she meets Ky who happens to be the person from the micro card. They later fall in love with each other since they get to know the secrets of each other. He teaches her how to read, write and memorize the poem that her grandfather gave to her before he died. Nevertheless, since she is matched with Xander, she cannot be with Ky because he is an outcast. Therefore, they run away to the Outer Provinces to be together. Another love triangle that can be observed is in the book If I Break. There is a love triangle between Lauren Brooks, Cal Scott, and Jenna. Cal has a split personality disorder, so he has two different personalities: Chris and Cal. Chris is the personality that wants to go back to his parents house and help them on the farm. Cal wants to have a life in which he is rich and popular. Cal is married and has a baby girl with Lauren, and Chris is planning to get married to Jenna. These love triangles in these three books help keep the plot sustained by always coming up with situations that conflict with one another. While reading young adult books, abnormal settings can be common.
City of Ember, for example, is a perfect example of unreal settings. The City of Embers is set in an underground city that gets its electrical power generated by the river and has supplies that can last up to about 200 years. Similarly to City of Ember, the EverBlue shows a world underwater. The setting is in Natatoria, a city of underwater houses and underwater battles. These two book’s settings are on Earth, but yet surreal in a different sense. Ender’s Game takes place in space. In Ender’s Game, Ender being a third child, is sent to a space school to train to fight alien beings called the Buggers. City of Ember, Everblue, and Ender’s Game are few examples of unusual
settings. Additionally, many of the young adult books have characters that possess superpowers. The book that has this is Everblue. In Everblue, Tatch is a boy that has superpower abilities since he is a merman. He is able to heal humans. This is shown when Ashlyn, his sister’s best friend and the girl next door, falls into the freezing cold water after cutting her thigh on the side of the canoe and almost dies from hypothermia. Another superpower is to telepathically talk to his twin sister while they are underwater. This is similar to the superpower that Roseline has in Forbidden. Roseline has healing abilities as well because she is a vampire that flees her husband's cruelty. She heals Gabriel, the person that she falls in love with, while going to high school and tries to have a normal life. They get into a really bad accident with a trunk that almost smashes their car. She is able to feed her blood to Gabriel and save his life, then escapes before he gains his consciousness. Ender’s Game is another book that is similar to Everblue. In Ender’s Game, Ender is able to telepathically talk to the Bugger’s queen in the pupa after he destroys their entire planet. Superpowers are another common characteristic between young adult books.
In order to have good young adult books, they need to have certain characteristics such as love triangles, interesting settings and characters with super power. These are a few characteristics that bring drama and a sustaining plot so the reader is entertained by the story . These characteristics soon will be common among many books and movies. While movies are only short the books will be sustained and will appeal to many audiences. An example of this is the book Divergent. The movie does not include all the details that the book has which is why the book is more popular than the movie.
