His initial reaction is much different, upon hearing that the police have recovered Susie’s hat and that the amount of blood they found indicates that she is likely dead, he immediately retreats away. “He was too devastated to reach out to [Abigail] sitting on the carpet…he could not let [her] see him” (Sebold 32). Jack does not know what to do or say to console his family and feels like it is his responsibility to stay strong for their sake. After the initial shock, Jack decides to devote his time to finding Susie’s killer, hoping that he will Susie as well. His efforts are focused on keeping busy so that he may not be reminded that Susie is gone. His constant guilt for not being able to help Susie when she needed it most withdraws him from his own family. Jack is still overcome with grief at times, leading him to break the bottled ships that he and Susie had worked on. He tries to make up for his emptiness by developing a relationship with Lindsey, to replace Susie. His grief also prevents him from developing a strong relationship with his son, Buckley, who constantly feels overshadowed by his older sister’s death. Jacks severe reactions greatly affect the relationships he still has; driving his wife away and forcing Lindsey to grow up prematurely. “[Jack] could see glimmers, like the colored flecks inside my mother’s eyes – things to hold on to” (Sebold 306). Susie Salmon shows great emotion through out the movie “The Lovely Bones”. Highly recommend this movie to those who love a thriller and a heartbreaking movie. The reason being behind recommending this movie is that it drags you to the edge of your seat, the fear from Susie Salmon, and the amazing acting from everyone, even though there is some disappointments in the movie, for example how clueless the police are when they are in George Harvey’s home while asking questions around the neighborhood. Through out the movie Susie Salmon, also known as Saoirse Ronan, faced many things that brought fear to everyone even the watcher. When Susie Salmon was drawn into the under ground “hang out” you can tell by the look in her eyes she was terrified.…

The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold is a truly different novel. It is told from the perceptive an average fourteen year old girl named Susie Salmon. The one thing that makes Susie unique is that she was raped and murdered and shares her story from Heaven. The beginning of the book is intriguing. The scene in which Susie is raped and killed is graphic enough to cause the hairs on the back of the reader's neck to stand up but not disgusting enough to turn you off to the idea of reading any further. It truly wraps the reader into the book and makes you want to continue reading because it is both emotionally and mentally stimulating. As you continue reading, you would expect the novel to keep you on the edge of your seat for all three hundred twenty eight pages, but that is simply not the case. The middle of The Lovely Bones is actually quite boring. It is a very slow pace book and there were times were I considered skipping whole chapters just to pick up the pace. It serves the purpose filling the reader in on Susie's life during the past and present, both in Heaven and on Earth. It is incredibly drawn out but overall the plot line in fantastic. It shows how each character handles the tragedy of losing someone so close to them. The ending of the book begins to pick of the pace and again causes the reader to be on the edge of their seat. The ending offers the reader closure but is also open to interpretation. Overall, The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold is an emotional trilling novel although, it can get boring at times.…

Sebold uses first person narration, with the narrative being told from the perspective of Susie Salmon. This is a technique used by Sebold, as she has created Susie’s voice to be conversational rather than formal to create sympathy with her. Susie retells the events that took place before and after her death, sharing with us her thoughts opinions and feelings to allow the reader to identify with her and sympathise with her as the poor innocent victim whose only wish is to grow up. For example, when Susie tells the reader about each person having different versions of Heaven which give them their desires, she says “I could not have what I wanted most: Mr. Harvey dead and me living.” Susie is able to see everything by looking down from Heaven, therefore she has the knowledge of all that has taken place and in addition the ability to read into the minds of other characters. For example, when Susie watches Ray Singh looking at her photo, she says “What did dead mean, Ray wondered. It meant lost, it meant frozen, it meant gone.” This provides a greater perspective for the reader, and therefore an opportunity to identify the situation and sympathise with other characters also.…

The Lovely Bones is written through the eyes of Susie Salmon, George Harvey’s young victim, who is learning about and observing the world from heaven. Therefore we never directly learn solid fact of Mr. Harvey’s past, motive or thoughts. Our knowledge as a reader is completely subjective to Susie’s interpretation. Sebold’s choice to depict the novel through the victim’s eye beautifully displays a perspective not often seen or discussed in popular culture, as the topics touched on in the novel are very sensitive and taboo. Sebold’s choice of narrator is also a direct contrast to Nabokov’s novel, Lolita.…
