Thesis: To the Oak and I Am Willing That Is It a Torrent are two famous poems in the poetic world. Both of them write about poets’ desire of love. However, from these two poems, we can see two different view of love. Why these two love poems show disparate opinion to us? How do these two poets describe their love in diverse ways?
Introduction: Love is an eternal topic in the world of poem. To the Oak is a Chinese love poem that written by Ting Shu, a famous Chinese woman poet. This poem uses personification to represent the women’s desire of equal treatment and respective in love. I Am Willing That It Is a Torrent is written by Hungarian poet Petőfi Sándor. It is also a poem that describes human’s love, but it seems a little bit different from To the Oak. This Hungarian poem uses figurative language for showing the devotion of love.
Symbolism: In the aspect of male’s symbolism, both of these two poems use some symbolisms that represent masculine. But I Am Willing That It Is a Torrent emphasizes the symbolism of devotion. Petőfi uses “torrent”, “neglect woods”, “ruins”, “thatched cottage” and “cloud” (“I Am Willing That It Is a Torrent,”1,6,12,18,25) to show how the man can sacrifice himself to make his lady be happiness. To the Oak just uses the symbolism “oak” (“To the Oak,” title) to show the male’s symbolism, which means strong and independent masculine image. In the aspect of female’s symbolism, it is also seems like the male’s symbolism in these two poems, all the symbolisms are feminine. Likewise, they have different parts. The symbolisms in the I Am Willing That It Is a Torrent, such as “small fish”, “bird”, “blue and green Chinese ivy”, “lovely flame” and “coral 's the setting sun” (“I Am Willing That It Is a Torrent,”4,10,15,22,28), are all describe a feminine image which is emotionally bonded to the very persons who
