Muscles are group of tissues that covers our whole body, and acts as a sponge-bed for our bones. In addition, it prevents our bones from getting easily injured. However, muscle cramp is a condition in which it contracts involuntarily, and does not return to normalcy. The home remedies for muscle cramps relieve the unnatural contraction of muscles, and help to normalize this painful condition.…
The structure of the vertebrae is composed of wood, elastics, tacks, pool noodle, duct tape, two washers, rope, wire, coat hanger and saranwrap. The wood represents the bone part of the vertebrae. There are three different sizes of vertebrae on our structure. The smallest size is the cervical, the medium size is the thoracic and large size is the lumbar and the sacrum. The pool noodle presents the cartilage between the vertebrae disk. The group knows that the cartilage between the disks are a little bit bigger than the disks themselves because they get compressed from the weight of the body but could only represent . The tacks represent either the insertion of the muscle and the elastics represent the muscle itself. The saranwrap represents…
Lumbago is a common disorder involving the muscles, nerves, and bones of the back Pain can vary from a dull constant ache to a sudden sharp feeling. Lumbago may be classified by duration as acute (pain lasting less than 6 weeks), sub-chronic (6 to 12 weeks), or chronic (more than 12 weeks). The condition may be further classified by the underlying cause as either mechanical, non-mechanical, or referred pain. I will define these back problems for you in the following sentences. Injuries or strains can be brought on from being overworked or deconditioned. Osteoarthritis is excess wear and tear on the spinal discs caused by aging. Ruptured discs are created when wear and tear on the spine causes the intervertebral disc to bulge out. Spinal stenosis is the narrowing of the spinal canal. Diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis, or DISH, is the calcification of spinal ligaments which makes them very stiff. Ankylosing spondylitis is inflammation of the axial skeleton (includes spine) which leads to spinal fusion.…

One of the overarching goals of Healthy People 2020 is to help Americans achieve longer, quality lives—unencumbered by preventable diseases, disabilities, injuries, and premature death (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services [USDHHS], 2010). Debilitating or chronic back pain is a public health concern as it is often associated with negative health consequences and status. As such, reducing the prevalence of chronic back pain is a health topic identified and prioritized by Healthy People 2020 (USDHHS, 2010).…
The implementation of vertebrates as model organisms in experimentations is universally controversial, particularly when the aforementioned research is explicitly pain oriented. Concern over the wellbeing of stereotypical lab animals such as rats and mice are not misplaced, as long term exposure to pain has high risks of inducing greater levels of anxiety, alcohol abuse, and disturbing altercations of previously established behaviors (Anand, 1999); the risk to develop chronic pain from periodic acute pain is also increased over long term exposure (Al-Chaer, 2000). These studies demonstrate the ramifications of pain related studies; both short term responses to pain and the potential developments of long term…
According to the Institute of Medicine of The National Academies, the number of Americans who suffer from chronic back pain is 100 million (AAPM). Fortunately, there are many options out there that may help these Americans with their back pain. Relief ranges from surgeries to injections and from chiropractors to physical therapists and all in between. Having been diagnosed with scoliosis and degenerative disk disease since 2006, I have personal experience with most all of these treatments. Anyone suffering from grave pain of the spine needs to understand the difference between physical and chiropractic therapy before deciding which one to select as the correct therapy to relieve his or her pain. Although chiropractic work therapy and physical therapy both seem to be effective in treating diseases of the back, physical therapy seems to be more effective.…

Life was going to dramatically change as the nurses rolled me into the operating room. Back surgery is an invasive operation as it is, but imagine it in the eyes of a thirteen-year-old girl. The surgeons explained the procedure as a spinal fusion, with titanium rods placed along both sides of my spine for stability. This procedure would correct my scoliosis. Afterward, the pain was more than anyone should endure. I was not allowed to twist or bend, and I was unable to dress myself, or leave the house alone. This was difficult to accept, as I didn’t want to become dependent upon others.…
The most physically painful event I have endured was when I was hit in the face by a metal bat. This event occured when I was about eight years old. My older brothers and my neighbors always would play together, however they would never let me play with them. In one instance, they were playing baseball with my neighbor’s new metal bat. I was disregarding what everyone was saying and while they were playing I tried to run across the yard they were playing at. I did not realize how close I ran near my neighbor who was about to hit the baseball and he hit me in the face. I was knocked unconscious for some time and when I woke up on my bed with my brother’s trying to comfort me. I felt the throbbing pain radiating around my head. It felt painful to even blinking because I was hit near my temporal bone.I was rushed to the hospital and given medications to subside the pain. Therefore, I only felt the pain for less than two hours. However, when I was released from the hospital I still felt a continual pain for about a week. Therefore, the pain lasted about a week in total. When I regain consciousness after getting hit, my oldest brother immediately placed ice on my face, which helped to relieve…
