Loyalty
LOYALTY
In the play as the audience we witness loyalty in two different ways. It can be referred as loyalty and disloyalty, but I want to emphasize on loyalty in the concepts of one which the loyalty that audience seeks in a character as a true man and the other one is which the loyalty that the character shows to themselves. In the play we see the loyalty of Macbeth to himself where he murders King Duncan in order to take the crown. This proves his loyalty to his own ambitions and desires. Also murder of Banquo is another example where it is seen that Macbeth murders a loyal friend in order to protect his crown.”Thou shalt get kings, though thou be none” (Shakespeare 103)This prophecy from the witches trigger his protection system for upcoming events when he becomes the king and he fears that all the prophecies will come true. As a result he murders Banquo. Concept of loyalty is referred many times in the play. At the beginning the audience witnesses the disloyalty of the Thane of Cawdor and his punishment .This example shows the different understanding of loyalty once more. Thane o Cawdor was a loyal man to Norway, yet because of his position in Scotland he is accepted as disloyal. In the play the most loyal character is referred as Macduff. Loyalty of Macduff is questioned by Malcom.”It is myself I mean-in whom I know all the particulars of vice so grafted, that when they shall be opened, black Macbeth will seem as pure as snow…” (Shakespeare 184)In his speech Malcom refers himself as a king worse than Macbeth. He tries to resolve Macduff’s aim in coming to England. Malcom reviles himself to see the reaction of Macduff in order to learn about his intentions. Meaning if he is a loyal man to his country or not.”These evils thou repeat’st upon thyself hath banished me from Scotland. O my breast, thy hope ends here.” (Shakespeare 187)After this speech Malcom and also the audience trusts his loyalty because he talks about his beloved country and his lost hopes

In act 4 scene 3 Macduff goes to Malcolm, who is the prince of cumberland meaning he is the one who was supposed to become king next, and tells him about all bad things that are happening in scotland. Macduff also tries to convince Malcolm to come back to scotland and fight against Macbeth, the king. “Let us rather hold fast the mortal sword and, like good men, bestride our downfall'n birthdom.” This quote shows how Macduff is telling Malcom they should defend our fallen homeland like honorable men. By doing this Macduff is being a traitor because he is going behind Macbeth's back and attacking him. In act 5 scene 8 Macduff fights Macbeth and then cuts Macbeth's head off to show everyone that the king is dead along with the tyranny Macbeth created. “Enter Macduff with Macbeth’s head. Madame Defarge is a murderer and brutal human being. She has killed many people and will keep killing no matter who tries to stop her. Madame Defarge has a very revengeful mind and doesn’t think about anyone but herself. I hate that Madame Defarge thinks that she has all the power and can do whatever she wants. She doesn't take anyone's feelings into consideration and just does what she feels like doing even if it hurts the people around her. No one knows much about Madame Defarge because she is secretive and doesn’t show much emotion which I admire very much about her. Sometimes I think I can be a little bit like Madame Defarge on some instances. Such as having hatred or wanting diminutive revenge on someone that I believe deserves it.…

A significant event in this story was when Macbeth murdered Duncan. This struck uneasiness throughout Scotland and some people feared for their lives. Malcolm and Donalbain especially were afraid because they believed; “There’s daggers in men’s smiles.” (Act II sc (iv), ln 165) Banquo’s murder is a fearful moment as well. Macbeth orders murderers to kill Banquo by saying; “Who wear our health but sickly in his life,/ Which in his death were perfect.” (Act III sc (i) lns 119-120) Macbeth is the cause of his innocent friend’s death and he does it purely for his own benefit and personal gain. Macbeth also causes the death of Macduff’s family. He says to Macduff; “My soul is too much charged with blood of thine already.” (Act V sc (viii), lns 6-7) when Macduff challenges him. The family has neither harmed nor threatened Macbeth in any way. There is pity felt for the deaths of these innocent people and fear of the murderous Macbeth throughout Scotland. Macbeth; Scotland’s greatest and most formidable general, the Kings loyal servant, worthy Thane of Cawdor, respected gentry of Scotland’s bosom. A murderer, tyrant, fiend, and ‘Hell-Kite’. The tale of Macbeth represents how actions and fate can change the reputation and future of anybody, and that absolute power will corrupt absolutely. Prior to the encounter Macbeth had with the Witches, he was seen as the Hero of Scotland, and battle worthy and proven soldier; gallant and friend to many, “My noble partner” (Banquo). After he is exposed to the evil and supernatural demeanour of the witches, he is overwhelmed, overcome by ambition, lust for power, lust for more than the title of the Thane of Cawdor. He begins to rely on the witches for information, and is eventually considered by even them, evil, “By the pricking of my thumbs something wicked this way comes” (Second Witch). However, before all the misfortune, circumstance and ambitious actions, Macbeth was once seen as a valiant man, a great hope for Scotland “I have begun to plant thee, and will labour to make thee full of growing” (King)…
