Coranado was born on September 22,1954. He was born in Salamanca, Spain. His father was a wealthy aristocrat. Even though Coranado had a wealthy upbringing, he had no prospects of inheriting the family fortune. He instead wanted to make it on his own in the new world, which led to his occupation: exploring. Coranado traveled to New Spain in 1535 and enjoyed the support of Antonio de Mendoza, the viceroy of Mexico. He got a position in the Spanish government, and married well also. His newly wed wife, Dona Beatriz, was the daughter of Alonso de Estrada, the colonial treasurer of Mexico. Later on, Coranado rose in rank in the government, receiving an appointment to governorship of Nueva Galicia. Tales of gold and other riches located north…
In part one of Enrique Journey, what struck me the most about his experiences so far is him being without his mother. I love my mother and I can only imagine not being without her for a long time. Reading part one of this book, I felt sad for Enrique and his oldest sister because they were so sad and emotional about their mother leaving. What surprise me the most about part one was when Enrique’s dad left him for his girlfriend and he didn’t want Erique to go with him. Enrique father was so wrong to me and it was sad that he didn’t give Erique the love he needed. It was also sad to me that Lourdes was a struggling when got to the U.S and it was hard for her to make ends meet. Lourdes knows that Enrique needed her and miss her but she is at…
When I read the article I thought of how the evidence played such a big role in the case of Enrique. Even though the Mexican police did all they can to destroy all of the evidence FBI agents were able to use limited evidence to bring Enrique’s killers to justice. The MFJP tried to destroy the obvious evidence but it wasn’t enough because they were found out. This article was about when the FBI forensic team went to Mexico to…
On the weekend while celebrating labor and my sister birthday party, we went back to my old hometown. While in Texas we were hungry driving around looking for a good place to go eat. We decided to go and try a Mexican restaurant located in Arlington Texas, where my friend Jose Reyes lives.…
businesses that do not have headquarters in any part of the global south, just the global north which would be the countries listed above. Due to Honduras being in the global south the amount of jobs offered are slim and the pay is even less. Lourdes knows the difference between the United States and Honduras and realizes that Tegucigalpa is not beneficial for her family anymore. “The availability of cheap labour, resources, and favourable production conditions in the global south has enhanced corporate mobility and profitability” (Steger, 50). The owners knowing this will be able to make a higher profit because they do not have to pay their workers as much.…
I met my mentor as I opened my front door on a brisk fall Friday night, November 11, 2011 to be exact. He stood at about 5’3,” which made me laugh a bit because I was taller and I would be calling him my mentor. The style he had was that of a preppy college student. The voice he had was so loud that it echoed throughout my house as we first chatted. Out of all the attributes that make up Francisco, the one that will forever be stuck in my brain will be that of his enormous smile. Francisco always figures out a way to keep his big bright smile on his face, despite the situation he is facing. Francisco San Miguel’s dedication and hard work are two things that have led him towards his success…
Oxfam, the international charity that works to right the wrongs of poverty, hunger, and injustice, states that “The obligation of States to respect, protect and fulfil the Right to Food as a fundamental human right requires the appropriate policy initiatives. As such, its legal recognition is a necessary –though insufficient - step in its fulfilment and provides the framework for justiciability.” I felt that the human Rights issue that was highlighted in the book Enrique’s Journey was the one of the right of access to adequate food. In the book, the mother Lourdes, leaves Honduras to make the trek to illegally work in the United States and earn money to send back to her family because “Lourdes can barely afford food for Enrique and his sister Belky.”.(p20). In Honduras the world food program runs an initiative where smallholders provide food for the school meals program, providing 1.4 million school children with a meal every day. However, many young children in…
"France has lost the battle. But France has not lost the war."- Charles de Gaulle. That is a quote I go by as I stand here at the Soccer Academy. I have a memory that really has affected me. That one really embarrassing moment. I have lost my soccer game eleven to four. Those numbers affect the way I play now even though it was about a month ago.…
It was a Wednesday morning that I'll never forget. I had woken up at 3 in the morning because I had to be at a park for a physical fitness test. The test was not until 6 but because I was taking the bus, I had to make sure I was out of bed and out of the house early in the morning. The first few minutes of my commute were peaceful; there was light rain, birds chirping, the insect's low buzzing in the distance. It was just a normal morning. After I had gotten on the 85 bus that goes down Central to Jefferson Park I was a little groggy so I rested up against the heating compartment. The little designated area where you push a button and the heat comes on during the winter months so that commuters are not stuck out in the cold for too…
The color of my skin, texture of my curls, and sound of my accent does not solely define who I am. I define myself as Mariela De Loa, a Catholic, Mexican-American young woman. My adolescence consisted of me growing up in a middle class household with my mother, father, and three siblings. From a young age my parents embeded religious morals into my norms and values. I was taught to put God above all and treat those around me with respect. My parents also enforced the Spanish language while I was growing up. By the time I entered kindergarten, Spanish was my dominant language, so I couldn’t speak English as well. It was difficult for me to get along with other kids because none of them looked like me or spoke the same language as me. Essentially,…
"A Lifestyle" by Fernando Sorrentino entertains the reader with its humorous story of a young bank employee who gets locked in his apartment. He contacts a locksmith to open the door for him, but the locksmith finds out that he does not have any money with him to pay for the service. He informs the young man that the rules that govern his trade will not allow him to open the door without payment. The young tries other locksmiths only to find that he has been blacklisted. He tries calling his girlfriend who does not believe him and refuses to help. He also tries employees at his bank, but they either don't believe his story or think he is silly for allowing this to happen. After his phone is shut off, he attempts to throw messages off…
From the time I was a young child, I was taught the importance of hard work and dedication. Up to this point, I have lived by these principles, incorporating them into every aspect of my life. Although this determination has proved useful in many circumstances, it has been most apparent in my one true passion: soccer. I have put my heart and soul into the sport since the moment my five-year-old feet first touched a ball. Now I believe that growing up is about making decisions that one’s former self would have been much too frightened or intimidated by to follow through with. In some cases, it is having enough of a backbone to avoid being walked upon by those who think that they have a right to do so, no matter the repercussions. That is why that, in my opinion, the moment that I quit the Seneca Valley Varsity Soccer team was the moment that I finalized my transition from childhood to adulthood.…
I was sitting in my freshman geometry class, talking to some friends about injuries. We were talking about how none of us have ever gotten injured in our entire life. I had been playing sports since I was in the sixth grade, and nothing ever happened. In my life I had never broken a bone. I had never even sprained an ankle. I had never worn any kind of brace, taped an ankle, or talked to a trainer about any muscle issue or pain issue. When kids would lay on the court, I always thought they were fine or looking for a little attention. My thought was that they needed to rush off the court because they were dripping sweat all over the hardwood floor, and they were taking too much time up. I used to assume they were killing our momentum when they would fall down and cry because some schools…
It’s Monday, December 9th. Today just seems unusual, like something big is going to happen! I wonder what it will be for a split second, then go back to studying for the Latin America quiz we have tomorrow. Mr. Fielder announces what questions we should highlight on our worksheets. I watch him go back to his desk. I look up and out the window, I see the glistening shimmer of fresh snow dancing in the sky. I cherish every second of it, wishing the time would go by slower. As time creeps closer to 12:20 p.m., the more I shudder at the thought of having to go to room 224. I finish making my flashcards, using splendid handwriting, and proper spelling and grammar. The clock whispers 12:18 p.m. in my ear, I turn white as a ghost.…
Starting soccer when I was only five years old was challenging because of my October birthday I had to play with all the six year olds. My parents had put me in soccer because I was a young boy filled with too much energy. After playing soccer for about a year I decided I wanted to do more, I loved the sport. I started playing club soccer when I was 7 years old, playing for under the wing of Charley Amblo. This was a training team only, it was not till I was nine that I was started playing for a travel team. This was the beginning of where I learned my leadership, time management, and teamwork dynamics.…
