Melissa Duffy’s essay titled, “Inspiration” is an excellent example of how an individual’s attitude toward a certain subject, in this case, writing, influences the way the preform. As I read, it dawned on me that the approach our teacher take in teaching us have an immense impact on our attitude towards it. Duffy tells her story of “Inspiration” in a periodical format to lay out the moments in time that shaped her as a writer.…
Mary Rowlandson was an English woman born in 1636. Her parents were John and Joan White. They had moved to Massachusetts in the year of 1639. They were a Puritan family and strongly devoted to their religion. Mary Rowlandson was especially devoted. She went through what is called King Philip’s War. The Indians following Metacomet raided the homes of Plymouth. During this war about 5,000 Indians were killed and about 2,500 colonists were killed. Mary was moved and sold, along with many others including her children, by the Indians(213). The Indians beat, starved, tortured, dehydrated, and killed the colonists that they took. Some of the Indians were not abusive towards their “property” or slaves. Some were gentle and helped the colonists in their time of need.…
Stories can control our imagination which can control people’s mind, but writing can help make since of what humans can’t process in the mind. Miller shows us…
The Lady of Landuc’s actions were a consequence of Yvain's dishonorable oath on courtly love. Yvain married The Lady of Landuc saying, “I’m wholly yours; I’ve pledged today to yield to you and to obey all your commands.”(Bédier, 1973, p. 56) Yvain’s pledge is relevant because it plays a major significance later when he neglects her. Yvain ignored his oath completely when she commanded him to come back to her within a year of fighting for his pride of self-reputation as the best knight. Yvain became aware of how he overstayed and his lady sent a maid to take what she had given him to protect him in battle, “The ring will be your mail and shield.” (Bédier, 1973, p. 73) When the maid confronts Yvain she accuses him of treachery and makes it clear…
Killed by disease and starvation, angered by English intrusion upon their land, and enraged by the English’s heavy-handed diplomacy, New England’s Indians struck back. Mary Rowlandson was the wife of a Puritan minister when, in February, the village was attacked by the Wampanoags. The Indians burnt down the village and killed or kidnapped its residents. Rowlandson spent nearly three months in captivity before being ransomed. Mrs. Rowlandson was able to persevere the hardships because she openly welcomed the challenges and struggles for change.…
Author Mary Rowlandson wrote a narrative describing her captivity by the native Indians during 1670s. Her book then published in 1774. She organized her thoughts by grouping them into various “removes” which was her displacements with the Indians. The overall structure flows chronologically from the first remove to the twentieth one. Before she jumpstarted to the first remove, she gave a brief introduction of how it began. Upon close reading her texts, I will divide the analysis into four main components namely the structure, context, content, and the abstraction.…
Mrs. Mary Rowlandson’s interpretation of her imprisonment by the Algonkian Indians is one of the earliest and most known narratives of captivity. Despite the extreme tragedy that Mary Rowlandson experienced when being taken captive by the Native Americans, she still remained strong and claimed that her captivity brought her closer in relationship to God. In “A Narrative of the Captivity and Restoration of Mrs. Mary Rowlandson”, the reader is able to experience the accounts of Rowlandson’s diary, which recounts her capture that lasted around eleven weeks, and is described in twenty ‘removes’. The story of Rowlandson is closely related to the book of Job. Through both characters’ constant faith during loss of loved ones, health problems, and restoration the reader is able to see the similarities of the two stories.…

Throughout the story the narrator has to be secretive when she writes; she is not allowed to do anything to stimulate her mind. She says “I did write for a while in spite of them; but it does exhaust me a good deal—having to be so sly about it, or else meet with heavy opposition” (Perkins, 65). Writing is her way of expressing herself and when she has to be sneaky about it she becomes tired. Although she…
“In fact, all writing is an attempt to transform ideas into words, thus giving order and meaning to life” (The Longman Reader, 13). Moreover, The Longman Reader reveals, “You might also have noted that figurative language, energetic verbs, and varied sentence patterns contribute to the essay’s descriptive power” (The Longman Reader, 83). Good writing communicates emotion to the reader, evokes figurative language, and uses reoccurring themes. These strategies are exemplified in stories such as: Maya Angelou “Sister Flowers,” Gordon Parks “Flavio’s Home,” George Orwell “Shooting an Elephant,” Virginia Woolf “The Death of The Moth,” Langston Hughes “Salvation,” and many more short stories.…

Taking a humorous approach to the realities of being a writer, the chapters in Lamott's book are wry and anecdotal and offer advice on everything from plot development to jealousy, from perfectionism to struggling with one's own internal critic. In the process, Lamott includes writing exercises designed to be both productive and fun.…
The most vivid memory I have of writing is back in the tenth grade. I had the best teacher ever in regards to writing. I used to view writing as a senseless waste of time. Writing, in my opinion, at the time was always noted to be formal and boring; however, my tenth grade English teacher, Mrs. Perez, changed my whole perception of writing and how it affects humanity. One day after class she pulled me aside and recommended a book known as, “His Dark Materials,” which is about a young girl who, with her allies, fought for the discovery of a dark substance called the “Dust.” The book single handedly altered my mental picture of writing and creativity. Writing can be about anything in the universe, and the possibilities are endless. The main point, however, which ties everything together, is imagination. One’s imagination can truly be defined as infinite to the power of infinite, because it contains numerous amounts of details and features on life and the world itself. How does this tie to writing one may ask. Well an elaborate imagination helps to create an elaborate piece of writing. In the words of Benjamin Franklin, “either write something worth reading or do something worth writing.”…
