Luxury Car Marketing
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Luxury cars are a very small part of the pie in the total Indian automobile markets. However, they are a potent weapon for an automobile company to have in its arsenal. When effectively deployed by focused positioning, winning strategies aimed at the right target, they have the ability to produce “super-normal” contribution margins and wealth for the company.
Dominated by Mercedes Benz till a major part of the early 2000s, the luxury car market started picking up momentum fueled by many growth factors. More and more luxury segment cars are available in the Indian market today and the competition is ever growing to grab the biggest piece of the cake as early as possible.
This paper is an attempt at studying the past and present trends and strategies in luxury car marketing and understanding how these trends will morph themselves in the future. It aims at developing strategies and big ticket ideas that will help any automobile player present or aspiring to be present in this lucrative segment to be the leader of the pack by far.
The paper, in principal attempts to address some of these issues:
• Volumes in luxury car segments are wishful thinking – reality or myth?
• What is luxury and who defines luxury – is it a commandment or can the rules of the game be changed, bend and broken?
• Wealth = Volumes X Contribution Margin – can luxury car makers bake their cake and eat it too?
To achieve this we follow a methodology which focuses on a market and situational analysis with prime focus on
• Data, numbers and inferences
• The perceptions of luxury
• Who are the players and what they are doing?
Taking it forward, we define our Triple market concept which serves as base for our further strategies.
We then delve into the dynamics of the markets, behavioural patterns of the consumer, local intricacies etc. and other factors to come up with strategies which we believe can put luxury cars on the road to

The luxury industry can also be looked at as a status symbol. Conspicuous consumption leads to increasing demands for luxury good items and it is a growing industry with the global luxury goods market growing 9% per year (Business Wire, 2007). Advertising has a lot to do with it, especially Americans who are being constantly bombarded with advertisements on a daily basis. While finding exactly how many advertisements American see a day is nearly impossible, some studies have shown the number to be between 150 and 3,000 (Mortar, 2006). This leads to more consumers being exposed to or being told which items or brands are luxury goods, but unlike the definition for luxury goods, these conspicuous consumers buy their products for satisfy their self-esteem issues rather than for ease or comfort. Although an argument can be made is…

In the luxury automobile market, there are many vehicles that boast high quality workmanship, luxurious appointments and powerful drivetrains. For this research paper, the midsize luxury sedan segment was chosen because most of the vehicles from the brands in this segment have similar features, power, and most importantly, price tags. The flagship models of the brands were not chosen since the features and amenities are very different from car to car to such a degree that it would be almost impossible to compare the models. The retail prices of the flagship vehicles also vary by a few thousand dollars, making a fair comparison between the models even more difficult. The midsize luxury sedan segment offers consumers a good mix of quality components and craftsmanship, luxurious amenities, and ample power for daily commuting. These vehicles are designed for consumers who want luxurious, high quality vehicles at a fair price. The vehicle chosen for this study is the all-new Lexus GS430 sedan. The Lexus' two closest competitors are the BMW 545i and the Cadillac STS V8. The vehicles chosen are with all standard equipment but the navigation system option was added to each since the Lexus comes with it already loaded. The engine and transmission options were also chosen to equally match the vehicles in power and price.…

The luxury goods industry has a high level capital requirement, brand loyalty and recognition by consumers, the exclusive access to suppliers and distribution along with economies of scale, all make it difficult for new firms to enter the industry. Capital investment restricts entry to the industry as a large investment in marketing is needed to attract customers and to increase brand recognition. In additional suppliers and distributors have exclusive contractual agreement with manufacturers, thus creating a strain for new firms to build their supply chain. However there is an increase threat from internet based companies.…

THE GLOBAL AUTOMOBILE INDUSTRY: FROM GOOD LIFE TO BLOODBATH AT THE TOP* Plagued with overcapacity, the automobile industry is intensely competitive. However, life is not equally stressful for companies in the three broad segment within the industry: mass market, luxury, and ultraluxury. The number of mass market players, such as Chrysler, Ford, General Motors (GM), Honda, Hyundai, Nissan, Renault, Toyota, and Volkswagen (VW), is numerous, and competition is intense. For example, it takes an average of $3,400 of incentives per vehicle for the American Big Three to move their cars. This is not the worst: Saab broke a record by spending $6,200 on incentives per vehicle sold in 2007. These incentives crush industry wide profit margins, which on average stand at a low 5%. The luxury market has fewer players, such as Audi, BMW, Lexus, Mercedes, and Porsche. They use fewer gimmicks such as fat rebates or 0% financing, and their margins are at a relatively hea1thy 10%. Life in the ultra-luxury market seems to be most tranquil. Competition is more "gentlemanly," and changes come at a glacial pace. The handful of players such as Ferrari, Lamborghini, and Rolls-Royce, produce a small number of cars each year for the world's most discriminating customers: approximately 10,000 a year for cars produced above $150,000. Profits per car may exceed $20,000. This is a world apart from the mass market profits, which sometimes can be as low as $150 per car thanks to incentives. Overall in the ultra-luxury group, margins are comfortable, indicating a good life at the top. However, such a good life may be a thing of the past. It seems that every self- respecting carmaker is rushing to invade the lucrative ultra-luxury market, thus prompting a high- take drama never seen before. In 2003, three German carmakers launched three new entrants for the ultra-luxury market. Mercedes offered a $320,000 Maybach, which traces it roots to the gull-winged legendary 1952 SLR model. BMW, which took over…

An upsurge in buyer demand triggers a race among established firms and newcomers to capture the new sales opportunities. Such is the case in the Chinese auto market. "The urge to splurge" on luxury represents a new phase for China's car industry, the world's second largest auto market. As overall sales in China are swelling, it is a particular concentration of prestigious brands that care causing the high end of the market to expand twice as fast as the industry average.…
