M & M Project Paper
M&Ms® Project Report
September 12, 2013

Abstract
This paper will discuss the methods taught in Statistics this past semesters using what is being referred to as the M&M® project. Methods include random sampling, calculating random proportions, mean, standard deviations, creating histograms and identifying their shape such as bell, constructing confidence intervals for proportions and hypothesis testing of the samples. Each section of the M&M® project will demonstrate a lesson that was learned by applying the knowledge from the class to each separate part of the M&M project itself. The paper will conclude by discussing reasons why the results of the samples may have been different than anticipated.

Since the results needed to be as random as possible it was important that each class member visited three different stores. The idea of a random sample is one in which every member of population has an equal chance of being selected (Larson/ Farber 2009). Next the M&M®’s needed to be counted by according to color and the data was recorded and combined with the rest of the class to create a full random sample. Below you will find the results from the class data obtained by adding all data together from the entire class from part …show more content…
For example the blue proportions would be 757/3342=0.2265. Next I had to calculate the sample mean by dividing the number of bags by the number total number of candies. From our class data the total candies was 3342 and total number of bags was 60. The total mean calculated to be 3342/60=55.7. I also had to create a histogram which is a bar graph that represents the frequency distribution of a data set (Larson/Farber 2009). The histogram was bell shape which means the data had a normal distribution. In the course of this part I also had to create a descriptive statistics which provided information such as the mean, standard error, standard deviation, sample variance, mode and other useful information that can be used from the data collected. Finally for this part I had to create a summary to include the sample proportions, sample mean, standard deviation, sample size and type of histogram. The histogram, descriptive statistics and summary were all calculated using methods and techniques in excel. The proportions and mean were calculated by hand. Attached is the histogram and

The sampling method is the scientific procedure of selecting those sampling units which would provide the required estimates with associated margins of uncertainty, arising from examining only a part and not the whole. There are several types of sampling, however for this particular project we used random sampling in which each item of the data) has the same probability of being selected in the sample. In order to achieve true raw data, three bags of 1.69oz M & M candies were purchased from three different stores. The data from these bags were collected and placed into an excel worksheet to create a single data set (see below). This information was then entered into an excel spreadsheet and separated by individual bags.…

The following assessment investigates the practices involved in this semester’s statistical M&M evaluation. The paper initially describes the individual random samples taken and then combined into the class’ data set. Then the totals, their proportions, and some other descriptive statistics are detailed before examining the confidence intervals for the proportions. The next section tests the sample proportions against M&M’s advertized proportions. The final element of the project compares the percent of the Red and Brown candies in order to verify M&M’s claim of equality. The conclusion of the report offers recommendations for correcting any inconsistent proportions.…

For this analysis project, a 14 ounce (396.3 gram) bag of M&M’s was used to obtain the raw data (observed quantities). The different colored M&M’s were separated into different bowls by color and counted to obtain their individual quantities. I counted all colors three times to reduce error in my analysis. Next, the total was obtained by adding all of the individual quantities of the different colors. The sample size was very large with n=442 individual M&M’s. The observed quantities,…
