For M2 I will be comparing animated gifs to another animation format such as flash and I will also include things such as a few examples of flash and also animated gifs. If it is appropriate I will also include screenshots to support my findings and research. I will also be referencing the findings.
Last but not least for M1 I will be explaining the following:
• Persistence of vision
• Animation techniques used by historical pioneers of animation and these will include people such as William Horner, Edison and also the Lumiere brothers.
• I will also be explaining an animation type that is known as Claymation. …show more content…
P3: Discuss the features, advantages and disadvantages of animated gif
Advantages
Some of the advantages of animated gifs include they are easy to make using any type of animation application or you can also use some images.
This basically means that you can use a series of images and you can do this by using frames from something like a film and then when you have done this you can make a gif. Another advantage of gifs is that they are small in file size well most of them are depending on the image that you are doing. So this is good because you can easily run your gif image on your website without slowing down the loading time of the website so basically your website won’t be affected by the gif that you have inserted in. this is an advantage over flash because flash animation are a lot bigger then animated gifs and so by having large file sizes they can slow your website down. Another advantage of gif is that they are supported by literally every web browser so this good because you won’t have a limitation of choosing a web browser that will support your gif image. Last but not least another advantage is that a gif image has lossless compression and this means that the file size can be reduced without losing too much quality on the image so not a lot of pixels will be lost form your
image.
Limitations
Despite having a lot of advantages, animated gifs also have some disadvantages and they can be when you store a gif it only includes support for 256 bit colour palette. Another disadvantage is that animated gifs are supported by some browsers and this isn’t good for some people, gifs can only be run if the browser is up to date and within the required category for the gif to animate otherwise it won’t animate. The biggest disadvantage of gif is that the animation is internet bandwidth. This basically means that if a person’s internet connection is slow then this will make the gif animate slowly as well and this is a huge disadvantage. This will also lead to the person’s browser to decrease the performance and this is because the internet connection is slow and then the gif is forced to take up a lot of other resources of the browser and cause it to render slowly. Last but not least another disadvantage of gif is that once you have made a gif you cannot re-edit it to make it better or make any changes so if the person wants to do that they will have to make the gif all over again and this isn’t good because it will take time again for the person to make it again. So a two minute editing will cause him like 15 to 20 minutes to remake the gif.
Below is an example of an animated gif that I made. I have created the affect which means that when the gif animates you will see rain coming down. Also below I have an example of an animated gif which I made and when it animated the ball spins around.
M2: compare different animation formats
Usage
This is an important aspect when it comes to animation because as I have explained above is important because if it takes up too much memory etc. then it is going to decrease the performance and this isn’t good if you want to put it on a browser. Animated gifs aren’t that much big in size and the good thing is that gifs are also limited to the memory that they can use so usage basically. Animated gifs are mostly used as logos etc. and they can be put on websites. On the other hand flash uses a lot more memory and the usage is high in some circumstances, but a few disadvantages is nothing compared to its various advantages and some of the advantages include unlike gif files flash files can be opened and also edited without remaking the whole thing and other advantages can include audio can be included as well and another thing is that flash is easy to use. So in my opinion flash is better even if it does use more space but that extra space is worth it.
User interactivity
Gifs are relatively easy to make because the process of making a gif animate is simple and easy and this is because it is easy to understand software and also gifs are made up of images that are already made and are set in a sequence. So if a person wants to create a gif they can just put the images in the sequence and the software will do the rest of the work. On the other hand if a person wants to create a flash animation it may prove a bit difficult if the person is a beginner and this is due to flash being harder to understand. Flash animation will depend on the user because if the user is good with the software then they will be able to create a good animation. Flash animations are harder to create compared to gif but the visuals and the overall quality of the animation is better in flash then a gif.
Cost and efficiency
This is important because gif software is most of the time free and making a gif doesn’t require a lot of things. All it needs is a little effort and some work, a gif is made by using a series of images. On the other hand flash software requires more effort and time. So when one does this they will get a good animation visually etc. If we talk about the cost of flash software, it is expensive so this isn’t a good thing.
Compatibility
Gifs most of the time are easy to watch, no special software is needed in order to view a gif. One of the advantage that a gif has is that it is supported by nearly all browsers. On the other hand flash animation will require a specialised software called shockwave player and once this has been installed only then will you be able to play the flash animation. Another thing about flash is that because flash animations are large in file size they will need to be rendered in order to be played and this a big drawback. Gif on the other hand can just play because it isn’t that big in size.
Visual
Last but not least in this category gifs have a disadvantage and this is because gifs are only limited to only 256 colours per frame and because of this they are forced to have a poor quality of image as a result. Another thing about gif is that you can’t put sound into the gif. However flash is vector based and this allows it to be scaled to fit different screen sizes. Another huge advantage of flash is that you can put audio and also video into the animation which is really good. So in the end flash will have a better quality of animation than a gif. Below is an example of a gif it shows a person that lifts his hat of his head and then puts it back on.
