M3: Explain how accurate data on accidents and incidents contributes to improving health, safety and welfare in the workplace
Introduction
Accidents are unplanned events that results in injury, could’ve resulted in injury, where equipment is damaged or damage to the environment. In modern day construction reducing the amount of accidents on site is important as there are a large amount of negative effects of an accident. These range from the financial cost of the job such as the uninsured costs and also there are moral consequences of an accident with high accident rates demotivating to the workforce. So avoiding the accident is easier than having to pay all of the different costs. This is because on most jobs it will cost less to put some control measures in that reduce the chance and severity of an accident than to pay the cost of the accident.

After an accident occurs an accident report form has to be completed and from the accident reports accident data can be made. This is because by using accident data you can reduce the amount of fatalities which is key in health and safety. Companies with fewer accidents on site are more likely to get certain jobs than others because by using a company with reduced accidents it means that construction on site can actually be done and there is no need to deal with the implications of an accident. The client just wants the work done to the best possible standard and as quickly as possible they don’t want to deal with an accident as it would delay the work.
