Chapter 11: The Standard Asian Merchant Bank

The Standard Asian Merchant Bank is a Malaysian merchant bank headquartered in Kuala Lumpur. The bank provides financial services in asset management, corporate finance, and securities broking. Clients of The Standard Asian Merchant Bank are among others institutional investors, foundations, (semi) public institutions, companies, and high net- worth individual clients. Segments in which The Standard Asian Merchant Bank operates are small and medium-sized listed companies, real estate, and biotech firms.

Syafiq Aimi is a Business student from the National University of Malaysia which is located in Bangi, Selangor - about 35 km south of Kuala Lumpur. Syafiq is currently undertaking a research project for the Structured Products (SP) desk of The Standard Asian Merchant Bank’s securities department. The SP desk is responsible for developing and selling structured products: investments that consist of a portfolio of securities and derivatives. Structured products are investment instruments that are created to meet specific needs that cannot be met from standardized financial instruments. The products of the SP desk are tailor-made and they are developed based on the Standard Asian Merchant Bank’s niche specializations which are Asian listed real estate companies, life sciences companies, and shares.

The SP desk of The Standard Asian Merchant Bank has its own website that is primarily used to provide information to the users of the website. The website contains information about the products offered (e.g., brochures, legal documents, and bid-ask spreads), publications, and contact information. The website can be classified as a services-oriented relationship- building website. There are two main groups of website users; financial advisors and institutional clients

The Web site will be vital for McBride's success. The company will ensure operating expenses are low by employing only a few brokers and one support person in each office. Also, we will count on these mediums to sell those customers on the McBride Company for their initial and subsequent loan purchases. The majority of our advertising will be directing potential customers to our Web site and, from there, on to our offices. It is imperative that the Web site both educates customers about and sells them on our services. In the following paragraphs, Team B will present the initial results of our findings.…

L.M. Montgomery once said “We pay a price for everything we get or take in this world.” I think his idea of this is right. In order for you to accomplish what you want, there will be consequences and you need to get through it. I agree with this quote because it doesn't matter what you want to accomplish there will always be an outcome whether it’s good or bad. There are a lot of books that relate to this quote. One of them being, Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck and another called The Miracle Worker by William Gibson. Both Of Mice and Men and The Miracle Worker relate to this quote because they both experience and undergo situations and display actions that lead them to pay a price whether they caused it on themselves or not.…

In October, a French company (seller) and a Shanghai company (buyer) have set up a contract of selling 200 sets of electronic computers (1000 USD each), and the payment shall be made according to the irrecoverable letter of credit. And the delivery should be made on December at Port de Marseille. On November 15, Bank of China Shanghai Branch (issuing bank) made a $ 200,000 irrevocable letter of credit according to the instruction of the buyer and commissioned a French bank in Marseille to notify and negotiate this letter of credit. On December 20, the seller loaded the 200 computers on board and got the bill of lading, insurance policies, invoices and other documents as required by the letter of credit. And then it went to the Marseille bank for negotiation. Upon review, the documents are consistent; therefore the bank had paid $ 200,000 immediately to the seller. At the same time, 10 days the cargo ship left the harbor of Marseilles, the cargo, along with all the goods, sank into the sea in a heavy storm. By that time the issuing bank had received the whole set of the documents and the buyer had already known the total loss of the goods. Bank of China Shanghai Branch intends to reimburse the negotiating bank to pay the purchase price of $ 200,000 on the grounds that its customers can not expect the goods. In accordance with international trade practices, the following questions are asked:…
