Over time, the development of several partnerships between hospitals and the physicians that work there is considered an integrated physician model. The types of places this model could be seen are acute care hospitals, nursing homes, employed physicians for primary care and independent medical groups to name a few (Harrison, 2016). The goal behind the integrated physician model is for an agreement between both the hospital and the physician that will benefit the health care system as whole. There is a model that suggests hospitals work under an agreement with physicians that will market a successful network. In this case, physicians are in a shared partnership with the hospital. Another option is physicians working for the hospital, allowing…

Hospitals are one of the many organizations that must comply with regulations to keep patients and staff safe and as well as maintain the quality of care. Ideally, a good care system for patients includes medical professionals as well as friends and family to compliment each other in providing for patient needs. Because patients require care from medical professions in hospitals, there are provisions that the hospital must follow. “Compliance means conforming to a rule, such as a specification, policy, standard or law. Regulatory compliance describes the goal that corporations or public agencies aspire to in their efforts to ensure that personnel are aware of and take steps to comply with relevant laws and regulations (Compliance and Regulatory Compliance, 2013)”. For this reason there are terms of compliance that hospitals must adhere to. The Joint Commission Handbook serves as a means of regulation and compliance for hospitals and other such facilities. There are four categories that the Joint Commission focuses on during the accreditation audits for a hospital: Information Management which involves the efficient management of health information and accuracy, Medication Management involving labeling and sterility, Communication involving verification, and Infection Control to minimize spread and infection.…

Like other healthcare systems, systems that utilize a gatekeeper have both benefits and flaws. The first advantage of having a primary care provider (PCP) as a gatekeeper is that your healthcare will be organized. PCPs are trained to treat the entire person, physically, mentally and emotionally. Instead of honing on a single disease or organ, PCPs diagnose and treat both acute and chronic illnesses. They also help prevent diseases by providing routine health care check ups and counseling for lifestyle changes. If PCP suspects any problem, they make initial diagnoses, counsel their patients and make necessary referral to a specialist. After the patient is recovered with the help of a specialist, they return to their PCP who is updated with their current information and helps them with ongoing recovery and prevention. According to Palos Hospital Community, the involvement and communication that can develop between PCP and their patient help better overall health outcomes. When patients feel comfortable explaining intimates details of their health, their doctor can better understand their…

Federal regulation agencies function as an extension of the executive branch in government that generate and enforce legislation. Regulation and regulatory agencies play an important role in the health care arena. The array of regulations that govern healthcare are overwhelming, however, each individual regulatory agency has a specific scope that focuses on protecting and maintaining quality care, and work to improve access and affordability for Americans. The path to practicing medicine has a display of regulatory hurdles. Healthcare regulatory agencies monitor practitioners and facilities, channel information on industry changes, promote safety, enforce legal compliance, and quality services. The driving force behind these agencies is to reduce costs while ensuring quality services. The current financial trends in healthcare move from volume to value. Cost effectiveness will drive the growth of integrated delivery systems focusing on higher quality, better outcomes, and greater satisfaction. When a hospital focuses on value, it requires the hospital to clarify on every dollar they spend. With that said, the significance of government agencies within the healthcare arena take on additional challenges in enforcing compliance to operating standards. Government agencies permeate virtually all day-to-day aspects of healthcares goods, services, reimbursement rates, patient protection, hospital accreditation, and licensure of professionals practicing healthcare. The regulatory agencies that enforce compliance to healthcare regulations and legislature provide structure and shape to Americas fragmented healthcare system. From the movement of each dollar in the healthcare arena to how patients and doctors communicate regulatory agencies will continue to translate policy into action and monitor and enforce compliance with healthcare regulations.…

    Managed care

Managed health care is a system of health care delivery managed by a company aiming mainly at quality/value cost effective services provided to patients. It has been introduced with an intention to avoid paying for unessential facilities and services directly to physicians. It helps in forming an intermediate between patients and physicians in such a way that health insurance organizations pay the physicians from the premiums paid by patients to insurers for the services provided. This helps in monitoring how cost effectively the services are utilized. It is not to be mistaken as health care delivery at discounted prices. It’s goal is to provide quality care at affordable prices by restricting patient’s choice of physicians and physicians limiting their fees. People who seek care in America are mostly enrolled in health care plans such as health maintenance organizations(HMOs) and preferred provider organizations(PPOs).The less common plan people are enrolled in is point-of-service(POS) which has features of both HMO and PPO.HMO provides integrated and preventive care services to voluntarily enrolled families with low premiums within the network of doctors and hospitals that belong to the organization. It requires to select a primary care physician(PCP) who serves as a personal doctor to provide all basic health care services. PCPs include family physicians and internal medicine physicians. Some HMOs consider pediatricians(for children), gynecologists(for women) as PCPs. Before seeing a specialist or for a diagnostic service, it is required to obtain a referral from PCP(“gatekeeper”). If an outside specialist is chosen or referral is not obtained before seeing a specialist, no coverage for services is rendered by HMO. All or most of the cost for the care must be taken care by the individual. In contrast to HMO, with a PPO it is not necessary to select a single doctor as policy holder’s PCP nor is it necessary to…
