In the play there is a theme of madness coming from the two main characters, Macbeth and Lady Macbeth. Lady Macduff asks if her husband is crazy for leaving them at the castle and “flees” to England. While he is England what makes him crazy is the fact he left is wife and children unprotected at home. The real fact is Macduff didn’t believe that Macbeth was crazy enough to attack and kill a woman and child who is unprotected, boy was he wrong. This theme of madness is best shown in the Macbeths, for Lady Macbeth believes there is blood on her hands when there is none, and Macbeth sees Banquo when in fact Banquo is not really there for he is dead. This theme is seen all over the place in this play. First it was during the killing of Banquo when Banquo tells his son to “fly,” which really mean for his son to run away from their attackers, allowing him to live and have sons that will become the kings of Scotland. Then again in the fourth act, during scene two, Lady Macbeth askes her messenger, “Whither should I fly?” carrying the theme of the bird with the theme of flight, or running away. In this case, Lady Macduff asks why should I flee, I haven’t done anything wrong so I should be fine, but if fact she is killed like the rest of the family of Macduff. Then there is one last them of flight were Macbeth is shown as a hawk that kills many in one fell
