Macbeth is a Classic Tragic Hero

“Power is poison. Its effect on leaders has always been tragic” (Search). This quote by Henry Brooks Adams holds a lot of truth and relates to Macbeth. Macbeth holds a high position in society as Thane of Glamis. Macbeth is a hero who has a tragic flaw which makes him fall from his position of power and results in the death of others and himself. Macbeth is a classic tragic hero because of he is a high ranking Thane, a hero of war, has a tragic flaw of overreaching ambition, falls from favour and then kills others and dies.
In the quote below the Captain is describing how Macbeth won the battle for them.
“Showed like a rebel’s whore. But all’s too weak;
For brave Macbeth-well he deserves that name-
Disdaining Fortune, with his brandished steel,
Which smoked with bloody execution,
Like valors minion carved out his passage
Till he faced the slave,” (1.2.15-20).
Macbeth is a high-ranking Thane and a hero because of his bravery stated above but also because of his courageous and manly behaviour during the battle as stated in this quote below:
“Till that Bellona’s bridegroom, lapped in proof,
Confronted him with self-comparisons,
Point against point, rebellious arm ’gainst arm,
Curbing his lavish spirit; and to conclude,
The victory fell upon us” (1.2.56-60).
Macbeth’s victories in these battles and his tough guy attitude in the battles are what resulted in King Duncan giving him the title of ‘Thane of Cawdor’ on top of the title ‘Thane of Glamis’ which he already occupied, as it says in the quote 1.2.66-68.
“No more that Thane of Cawdor shall deceive
Our bosom interest. Go pronounce his present death,
And with his former title greet Macbeth”.
This is just another piece of information showing how marvelous and heroic Macbeth is. But not everything about the brave, courageous, manly and tough Macbeth is as perfect as it seems. For Macbeth

Macbeth by William Shakespeare reveals the quote through conflict and irony. Three witches prophesied to Macbeth that he will be king. His first conflict is that he must make a sacrifice. To kill a friend, King Duncan, in order to take the throne. The witches also prophesied that Banquo's sons will be king, thus begins Macbeth's second conflict. He must have his best friend Banquo's son killed in order to protect his throne. These conflicts reveal the quote because killing both King Duncan and Banquo's son is a huge sacrifice. Irony also proves the quote. Before Macbeth even kills Duncan he is given the title Thane of Cawdor, which the one before him was a traitor. This is ironic because later Mabeth becomes a traitor and kills Duncan. The irony in this story reveals the quote because by given the name "Thane of Cawdor" foreshadows that Macbeth will lose his pride and honor.…

Written by William Shakespeare, Macbeth, is a well known tragedy based on the influence of greed. The main character, Macbeth, is described to be a greedy, selfish, cowardly man, and as the story continues, Macbeth portrays these traits as he fights for the crown. As the last scene comes to an end, and Macbeth falls, I see Macbeth’s death to be a good thing; Because he did not rightfully get the crown, he simply stole it from others. Satisfaction came with Macbeth’s downfall as well, I did not believe he was a great man nor did I believe that his fall was the death of a heroic man. However; as I make that statement, I agree with the beliefs that Macbeth is seen as a tragic hero. Though this seems like a contradiction to my previous statement, the true definition of tragic hero, as described by Shakespeare himself, is portrayed and seen by Macbeth in this tragedy.…

As King Duncan is brought into the military camp to discuss his troops’ progress in the battles with the Irish attackers, he is greeted by a heavily wounded captain, who is eager to describe the spoils of war. Without wasting a breath, he reveres the glorious Macbeth, who “disdaining Fortune, with his brandished steel, / which smoked with bloody execution, / Like Valor’s minion, carved out his passage” (9). The awe and admiration that the captain has for Macbeth can be attributed to his relentlessness on the battlefield. The fervor with which he delineates Macbeth can be compared to no other, and his invigorating speech continues to be seen throughout the rest of the scene. In fact, it seems the news of Macbeth’s victory is so contagious that the zeal the captain is feeling spreads to the rest of the characters as well. The comparison that was made to Valor’s minion served to expose Macbeth’s extreme bravery, as valor is bravery in itself, and the fact that Macbeth was its follower could not have been a higher compliment. Perhaps the highest praise that the captain had endowed upon Macbeth though, came through his comment about the blood. The comment about the bloody execution itself is so powerful, in fact, that is able to simultaneously arouse the involvement of all the senses in the reader. It becomes almost impossible to suppress images of Macbeth on the battlefield—the “smoked” and humid air…

Macbeth may be a tragic-hero because he matches Aristotle's definition for a tragic-hero. Macbeth is a courageous man with high rank, as he is the Than of Glamis and Duncan's cousin. He also has many good qualities such as being brave and loyal to the King. In the play he is loved by many people, especially Banquo and the King. Unfortunately for Macbeth and the kingdom he has a downfall. His downfall is his over-ambition and impatience. This flaw triggers his downfall morally and physically. When Macbeth murdered King Duncan he lost sight of what his morals where and what he stood for. Macbeth has his physical downfall when he is murdered by Macduff. This tragic end may be able to make the audience feel pity and fear. You can find yourself sympathizing with Macbeth because he was forced to commit the crimes due to the spell the witches had created and the pressure from Lady Macbeth. The audience may also be afraid to face the same destiny, as they believe in superstitions.…
