As it has been mentioned the reader can see through the characters traits of their ambition throughout the play. Prior to the beginning, about the characteristics the characters also had some actions to prove their ambition throughout the play.
For starters Macbeth eager desire to be king causes him to kill King Duncan. Macbeth killing the king shows his ambition because he keeps enduring with the process of killing the King Duncan even though he had doubts. With the many doubts that Macbeth had such as he would not be loyal or he would be caught and killed he reassured himself and persevered through his thoughts to accomplish killing the king. Lady Macbeth has a variety of events that shows her ambition in this play. In the play Lady Macbeth prays to invite spirts to help prepare her for the actions that she has commit. Lady Macbeth shows how ambitious she is because she prays asking for her emotions to be removed and to be filled with cruel spirts to help her accomplish planning for the event of killing the King so that Macbeth can become
king. As mentioned before with the characters actions that show how ambitious they was, the reader can also see how ambitious the characters are through their dialogue. For example in Act 5 Scene 8 lines 31-34 on pg.393 Macbeth states “And thou opposed, being of no woman born, yet I will try the last”. This quote shows Macbeth’s ambition to continue with the fight against Macduff even though he knows that he is going to lose. Macbeth is persistent with not giving in and decides to fight until one of them is damned. Lady Macbeth has a host of quotes that can represent her ambition throughout this play. For example in Act 1 Scene 7 lines 54-58 Lady Macbeth said “Have plucked my nipple from his boneless gums, and dashed the brains out, had I sworn as you have done to this”. In this quote Lady Macbeth masculinity ambition kicks in as she explains to Macbeth that if she promised she would do something she would do it no matter if the situation was not appropriate. According these quotes one can see Macbeth and Lady Macbeth’s ambition through their perseverance and determination to accomplish their goal no matter if it is uncomfortable or if it looks like the odds are against them. Therefore, in the play The Tragedy of Macbeth the dominant theme of ambition is shown through the characters Macbeth and Lady Macbeth characteristics, actions, and quotes. Macbeth characteristics helped to show his determination to become king and Lady Macbeth has her strong will and strong minded characteristics that show their ambition. Macbeth action of overcoming his doubt about the king allows him to kill the King Duncan and become king of Scotland. Lady Macbeth use of masculinity dialogue to her husband clearly demonstrates her ambition to motivate her husband into becoming king. With this evidence the reader can see the thriving theme of ambition within the characteristics, actions and quotes of the characters Macbeth and Lady Macbeth. After reading the play, The Tragedy of Macbeth the reader should realize the true meaning of ambition through the descriptions, events and dialogue of characters Macbeth and Lady Macbeth.
