Machiavelli
When referring to current events and leaders, Machiavelli’s advice to the prince is completely reliable. People of power, should never rely on others to get them their power, nor should they expect others to help them maintain their position of power. Rulers/leaders must lay down both good laws and good arms, and always remember to maintain a good reputation. With Machiavelli’s advice, all who are or wish to fulfill a position of power will do so with ease. President Obama is a perfect example of someone who should and I believe has been trying to abide by Machievelli’s advice. Our 44th President did not rely on others to get him to where he is today. He was not born into a family of upscale social class, but he applied himself as a kid, he applied himself as a teenager and to this day, we are able to witness him applying himself in his adult life to better our country. Barack Obama “pulled himself up by his own bootstraps” and because of that, he has set an example for so many to follow, and he still does not rely on others to maintain his position in the White House. He stands as his own man. In his first term as president, Barack Obama laid down his good arms by capturing and killing Osama Bin Laden. He has changed laws so everyone may receive healthcare and although there is a lot of controversy surrounding his decisions, he does not sway away from his first decision. He is a man of his word laying down both good arms and laws. Lastly, President Barack Obama has done his best to maintain a clean reputation. He allows the public into his family just enough to feel as if we are a part of it as well. He love for his wife is timeless and all of American sees it and idolize it. Although he is not perfect, he is following the advice of the great Machiavelli and it seems to be working due to the fact that he is currently in his second term as our 44th President.

Machiavelli believes that a government should be very structured, controlled, and powerful. He makes it known that the only priorities of a prince are war, the institutions, and discipline. His writings describes how it is more important for a prince to be practical than moral. This is shown where he writes, "in order to maintain the state he is often obliged to act against his promise, against charity, against humanity, and against religion" (47). In addition, Machiavelli argues that a prince may have to be cunning and deceitful in order to maintain political power. He takes the stance that it is better for the prince to be feared than loved. His view of how a government should run and his unethical conduct are both early signs of dictatorship.…

Machiavelli was a Florentine man of many skills. He was a renowned politician, author, and philosopher during the Renaissance, whose views and opinions affect the way people still think today. The Prince is his most famous work and in it he essentially states that humans are “ungrateful, fickle, deceptive and deceiving”. For that reason, a leader should rule through fear rather than love. However, what Europeans needed during the 14th, 15th, and 16th centuries were compassionate rulers. They were already frightened and disunited during the middle ages, thus adding a fearful leader to the mix would not help citizens feel safer.…

In Machiavelli’s The Prince, he tackles of issues in society and the government as a whole. Machiavelli believed a good ruler is one that could give justice and provide some type of order to his citizens. He believed that a good ruler should focus more on the present rather than what could be. Machiavelli used several examples to demonstrate his way of thinking in a humanistic way and running a government. He used the fox and the lion for an example. A good ruler should be able to use cunningness and brute force per situation in which it is called for. President Obama is an extraordinary figure who has done some good things in bad times, and some great things under impossible circumstances. As the first black president he has faced enormous difficulties and has had to weather a steady downpour of bad faith from the right wing and racist resistance from bigoted quarters of the country. He has been torn between America’s noble ideals of democracy and its cruel realities of race — a tension he rode into office, and one that occasionally defeated his desire to reconcile the best and worst halves of the nation he governs.…

“Be not afraid of greatness; some are born great, some achieve greatness, and others have greatness thrust upon them.” As playwright and poet William Shakespeare states, greatness is something that comes naturally to some, while others must put much effort in to achieve it, and others are forced into it. When examining the United States presidency, much effort must be put into identifying if a president was great and how the president rates compared to previous presidents. For example, political scientist Fred Greenstein (2005) describes six qualities that shape a president’s performance, such as emotional intelligence and political skill, and Joseph A. Pika and John Maltese (2004) add other elements, such as personal character and career, that shape a president’s performance. Besides examining the president on his personal strengths and weaknesses, Stephen Skowroneck (2003) states that it is also vital to evaluate what time period the president held office in, if the country was resilient or not at that time, and if the president supported the previous presidency. When evaluating if our current president, Barack Obama, will be remembered as a great president, using the above criteria and observation methods as well as comparing him to past presidents is vital. President Obama’s approval rating is currently 42% (Gallup.com), with citizens mostly angry about the country’s economic situation. However, with his use of new media and strong interpersonal skills, President Obama’s 2008 campaign and subsequent presidency has given Americans the most personal experience of any campaign and presidency to date. In addition, as the first African American president to hold the office, the historical significance of his presidency is enormous. Ultimately, despite the failures president Obama has experienced thus far in his presidency, President Obama’s campaign and presidency was so revolutionary that it will be remembered as great.…

Essay #15 Machiavelli believed that a leader should possess the ability to heroically and decisively for the good of their country. Machiavelli’s suggestion that a ruler should be like a lion and a fox was fairly true in Europe. Machiavelli uses a lion in comparison to a ruler because he thought a king should be strong and maintain an honest image. He also uses a fox as a symbol to show how a ruler is deceitful.Catherine the Great of Russia and Elizabeth I of England were both like a lion and a fox through their way of handling problems that they confronted during their reign. Elizabeth I of England and Catherine the Great of Russia were both good rulers who had policies against peasants/serfs, foreign countries, and religion. Catherine the Great of Russia had a strong army as well as Elizabeth I of England only difference was that Elizabeth I of England tried to avoid war but secretly encouraged Francis Drake to destroy Spanish fleets. Catherine the Great of Russia used her wisdom to decide when to use her powers to benefit Russia.Catherine the Great of Russia was like a lion because she suppressed the revolt of serfs which made her look strong. Peasants serfs tried to revolt but were not successful due to Catherine the Great of Russia. Another thing that made Catherine very powerful was the Russian military. She gained a large portion of Poland by leaving conquered Danubian area. Catherine the Great of Russia was like a fox because she controlled the nobles. She had earned the nobles loyalty by giving them control of the serfs. Thanks to the support of the nobles Catherine the…

These last eight years, a lot has happened, from the H1N1 outbreak, the Sandy Hook shootings, Hurricane Sandy, the capture of Osama Bin Laden, the withdrawal of troops from the Middle East, and many other events. President Barack Obama came in during one of the worst economic recessions since the Great Depression, and somehow he managed to control the situation. Obama came in when the country needed to count on the president the most, and he did his job as best as he could, he did it well enough that he served as president for eight years. Although he didn’t do something extraordinary to be one of the top ten presidents ever, Obama sure does deserve to be placed at least in the top twenty of best presidents of all time.…

Stability in a ruler’s morals and ethics are a vital asset to have when ruling a group of people. With similarities shared between the ruler and the common person the ruler will then be able to relate and be more respected amongst the population, as opposed to a ruler who rules with his own self interest at hand. In the piece, The Prince, Niccolò Machiavelli argues the many principles of how a prince should and should not rule. In order to rule successfully he states a prince must possess some of the following characteristics; morality, a strong army, strict rule, common ground with his people and also to be widely respected. Machiavelli laid the ground work for many rulers in the future with his modern view in a time where rulers were primitive and ruled through fear and terror. The Prince and its ideas can even be seen today in our modern day presidents and kings proving that Machiavelli had compelling ideas and arguments for how leaders can obtain and hold a position of power successfully.…
