TOPIC: MACHINE TOOLS

India stands 13th in the production and 6th in the consumption of machine tools in the world. The country is set to become a key player in the global machine tools industry with substantial increase in manufacturing of high end machine tools. The Indian machine tool industry has approximately 1000 units in production of machine tools, accessories/attachments, sub-systems and parts. Threefourth of machine tool producers in India are ISO certified. The market for machine tools can be segmented as shown in the chart:

Machine tools industry has been a significant component of industrial transformation in India. It has passed through many hindrances, but has managed to establish itself as a vital component of India’s industrialisation thrust. Machine tools include lathes, milling machines, shapers, grinders, hobbing machines, forging presses, sheet metal forming machinery, etc. Some of the advanced machine tools include a wide range of flexible manufacturing systems, robots, assembly lines, laser cutting machines, etc. The CNC segment of metal cutting and forming tools constitute a little less than half of the total production by value. In the past few decades there has been a shift from general purpose machine tools to CNC and other specialised machine tools. The economic slowdown in 2007-08 adversely affected the performance of machine tools industry after growing at an impressive CAGR of 25%, over the past few years, its output dropped by 20% in 2008-09.

The expansion of textile manufacturing was not only important in its own terms but also as a stimulus to the machine tool industry. This industry began developing machinery for a wide range of industrial activities, as well as iron and steel production. A key element of the machine tool industry was its emphasis on interchangeable parts for machinery. Known as the American system of manufacturing, it entailed an increasing range of products manufactured by machines that turned out identical objects and could be operated by a minimally skilled operator. The skill needed was built into the machine.…

    1. FINDINGS Black and Decker's DeWalt line has been so successful in the USA that it is now the standard for both the Professional-Industrial and the Professional-Tradesman market segments. Nolan Archibald, Chairman, President and CEO of Black and Decker (B&D) saw the potential in 1994 to increase the companies market share through worldwide sales of B&D products. While the company had a definite presence in the European Consumer Power Tools market segment, it lacked penetration in the Professional Power Tools segment. On the other hand, in Japan, where there was a huge market for professional power tools, B&D's market penetration was negligible compared to its competitors. B&D's vision for DeWalt is to be the global "Value Power Tool" provider of choice for every Professional Tradesperson and all worldwide Industrial markets. Based on the facts, the product managers of the DeWalt line have developed a global strategy based on the following conclusions: · DeWalt is a highly successful product in the US market. B&D must leverage its brand identity and marketing strategies employed in the US and also capitalize on their established quality and pricing. · B&D must explore the formation of strategic alliances with local distributors. Multiple and/or hybrid channels must be used to reach customers quickly and as effectively as possible. · Through a global strategy, B&D can appeal to consumer homogeneity by offering lower product costs while maintaining high product quality. The lower product costs derived from the economies of scale will maximize customer value exchange. · B&D must aggressively employ a hybrid push-pull communication strategy to be successful in the two markets. This will enable B&D to get the DeWalt name out to more customers in a diverse geography. · While Elu has performed better than B&D Professional and B&D Proline product lines in the European market, its lack-luster revenues compel B&D to replace the Elu product line with the DeWalt line. · There…

Women’s reproductive rights have always been a taboo topic in American society, as well as throughout history. Abortion and birth control are two of the most debated rights, especially following last year’s election. The taboo topic has caused a rift between major political parties and citizens in the United States, and has been the catalyst of movements like the pro-choice and pro-life campaigns. Pro-choice is the idea that a woman should be able to decide what she wants to do with her own body, while pro-life is the idea that abortion is a crime against the innocent, thinking the woman getting the abortion is a murderer. Abortion and birth control, despite being known to be dangerous, are safe practices that shouldn’t be taken away from women.…

Technology has had a huge impact on production in the U.S. From banking to factories to farming, technology has made our world faster, more transparent, safer, and, more reliable. Beginning with Henry Ford’s assembly line factory to today’s computerized machinery, the job requirements of the modern worker has changed substantially. Gone are the days of muscle work on the factory floor, now workers learn how to run computerized machinery to obtain the same results. Mechanics are still needed to keep machinery operating; however, the tools of the trade have changed. Instead of having to use sight, hearing and feeling of the machinery, now mechanics have computerized tools that diagnose where, in the machinery, the problem lays.…

Toyota are faced with a number of challenging and limiting factors when considering demographics. Firstly age, Toyotas target market seem to be middle aged environmentally aware business people, Toyota miss out on a number of young customers because of the cost of running the Prius and the fact that the younger generation are more interested in appearance then being environmentally friendly. Gender seems to have little or no effect on sales of the Toyota prius because both males and females are becoming more environmentally friendly in recent years. Income would strongly effect introduction and sales of the prius, the prius costs roughly 4000 euro more than the Toyota echo and according to the Environmental Protection Agency the testing procedure for fuel consumption of the prius is not as efficient as they made it out to be. One plus to having the prius is that the US government offers a 2000 dollar federal income reduction and in the UK it is possible to avoid London’s 11 euro per day congestion charge. Although Toyota attempted to educate people about the Toyota Prius before its, release, setting up a website and emailing potential customers, people were actually quite un educated about the car. This car was the first of its kind and even with Toyotas interesting advertising and marketing the Toyota prius is still very expensive for what it is. Sales were initially good for Toyota with a waitlist of three months in October 2000 , I think that people need to hear more positive reviews about this car before deciding to invest in it. A persons occupation would have a huge effect on whether they were interested in the Toyota Prius, for example a middle aged business man in the centre of London is more likely to buy the Prius than a Farmer in the countryside in Ireland. Along with helping the environment, he would also save himself 11 euro per day Congestion charge.…
