By examining what the media tried to do, and what farmer Ludvigsen told in this interview, it is possible to conclude that the theoretical model used in the case of Mad Cow disease is a connection between social ecological model (SEM) and health promotion theory. The SEM theory consists of person-focused and environment-focused interventions, which is destined to promote health. The word ecology refers to the interrelationships among interpersonal factors, interpersonal connections, primary groups, and public policy. The SEM assumes that individual efforts at behavioral change will be more likely to succeed within supportive environments, similar to health promotion theory (Stokols, 1996). These measures have been effective and the incidence of the disease has plummeted. Americans today have a strong faith in government agencies, and that their govenrment will protect the food they are eating, and in spite of warnings by some experts, BSE has not yet become a widespread problem in the U.S., at least not to the knowledge of the American public. Between 28-37 percent of the American people believe that Mad Cow disease was caused by cows that were eating genetically modified food, and that the transmission to humans could be reduced or elminitated by cooking the food, also that the human equvalant of Mad Cow disease can be treated with antibiotics (Hallman, et. al., 2005, p.4). However, that is not the case, although treatments can make the patients feel better (such as medications helping to ease the symptoms), and if the patients develop seizures, they may be given drugs to help control them. Sadly, the reality is that the disease is not curable, and that this disease causes death, from eight months for CJD. Today, there are researchers that are continuing laboratory testing and looking for medications to prevent development of prion disease in animals, there are also rumors regarding developing a vaccine to prevent the effect of prion disease (E-medicinehealth, …show more content…
By discovering that in American food industry money is the most imporant aspect, while in the Norwegian aspect, the peoples health are the most important issue. My recommendation is mostly targeting to the American media outlet, which should explain the disease and warn people regarding it, rather than just saying “stop eat meat”. It is almost as the other example from “60 minuts” regarding the apples, telling people “stop eating apple; you may get cancer”. People will not always be interested, and also get bored really
