In my perspective, I think that Madame Defarge and the vengeance are very much alike since they have many of the same characteristics. For instance, they like killing people for revenge, they have dark personalities to them, and they like watching people get executed at La Guillotine.
When I first met Madame Defarge she seemed like a very nice, caring and interesting person.
She was very quiet when I saw her and she sat in the corner and knit all day. When remembering Madame Defarge I think of her characteristics as “ Madame Defarge was a stout woman of about his own age, with a watchful eye that sold them seem to look at anything, A large hand to heavily ringed, a steady face, , strong features, and a great composure of manner”( Dickens 31). This shows Madame Defarge's physical appearances and that she was well respected. She had a confidence in her that no one could back down from. When thinking about Madame Defarge’s personality and how she related to the world “Only one soul was to be seen, and that was Madame Defarge- who leaned against the door-post, knitting, and saw nothing”(Dickens 47). As Madame Defarge is knitting she seems to be unaware of her surroundings and seems exceptionally innocuous, but in reality she is causing deaths. When Madame Defarge adds John Barsad to the registry she says “Eh my faith. It is a portrait! He shall be registered to-morrow” ( Dickens 171). Therefore, Madame Defarge does not take anyone's feelings into consideration since she is laughing and taking the deaths of people's lives as a joke. Madame Defarge is a cruel and murderous human that deserves to be punished for all the harm she has
caused. As i got to know Madame Defarge I noticed that she seemed to get more vicious and unwholesome. She would talk about people's deaths and how she is making a hit list. Madame Defarge's world revolves around her knitting and doesnt put it down for anything. She is a women who will not be satisfied unless there are great amounts of deaths and blood shed at La Guillotine. When rationalizing Madame Defarge's character “Madame's resolute right hand was occupied with an axe, in place of the usual softer implements, and in her girdle were a pistol and a cruel knife” (Dickens 207). Seeing that she has a desire to kill it shows me how cruel and careless she is. She wants to kill no matter how far the extremes go. When Madame Defarge is weeping “See! The old villain bound with ropes. That was well done to tie a bunch of grass upon his back. Ha, ha! That was well done. Let him eat it now”(Dickens 215). As she is watching this happen she is clapping in amusement. This shows how evil she is and how she doesn't care about any human or living thing except herself.
