Fahrenheit 451 In the story Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury the main character, Guy Montag, goes through a very significant amount of change. Although many characters affect his life, three people do especially; Clarisse McClellan, Faber, and Captain Beatty. Clarisse McClellan probably affects Montag the most in the story. For example, when Clarisse is talking to Montag outside of their houses she asks him, “Are you happy?” (10). At first, this question makes Montag laugh. Of course he is happy. Why wouldn’t he be happy? After a while however, Montag really starts to think about the question and he realizes that he really is not happy. There is something missing in his life, he just doesn’t know what yet. Another example of how Clarisse affects Montag is when she shows Montag the trick with the dandelion that shows whether you are in love or not, and according to the dandelion, Montag is not in love (22). Montag, hearing this is shocked and says that of course he is in love. Hearing this from Clarisse is what helps him to realize that he really isn’t in love with Mildred. Although Clarisse’s appearance is but a short one in the story, she hugely affects Montag’s life. Another character that affects Montag in the book is Faber. When Montag goes to Faber’s house for advice on books, Faber tells him, “It’s not books you need, it’s some of the things that once were in books… The same infinite detail and awareness that could be projected through radios and televisors but are not” (84). Faber really gets Montag to think when he says this. He gets Montag to realize that there really is something missing in his life, and that thing that is missing can be found in books. Another way that Faber affects Montag is when he says, “We are living in a time when flowers are trying to live on flowers, instead of growing of good rain and black loam” (85). When Faber says this, it makes Montag realize that he isn’t living
