We know that the subject matter of both Cimabue’s Madonna and Child Enthroned and Giotto’s Madonna Enthroned depicts the Virgin mother holding her son Jesus Christ upon a golden throne with angels at either shoulder. After looking at Cimabue’s work, it is debatable whether his apprentice Giottos surpassed the man. In manners of skill, Giotto’s more classical and naturalist style took on other stylistic components that very well exhibited a 3-dimensional space upon a 2-dimensional plane. In personal opinion, if the goal was to surpass Cimabue, then Giotto definitely showed prowess by giving his figure of the virgin a more assertive and realistic presence. Both Cimabue and Giotto use the ever-common gold background to unify their pieces. The…

While the religious icon had been a popular type of painting since the medieval period, a new style of icon emerged during the fifteenth century; this new icon was a type of hybrid. This new hybrid icon was a mixture of Western European and Eastern Greek and Byzantine styles while still maintaining its spiritual value. Not only did the west effect the east though, but byzantine styles had a great effect on the art of Venice; specifically in the work of Giovanni Bellini.…
The legend of the supposed sighting of the Virgin Mary by Juan Diego, from Britannica Biographies, starts of that his first vision of The Virgin Mary was on December 9, 1531. When he was visited, he was on Tepeyac Hill, which lies outside of Mexico City. In Náhuatl, the native language of Aztecs, asking him to build a shrine on the hill. Juan went to tell the Bishop about the incident but the Bishop did not believe his story and wanted proof. On December 12, Juan was visited by the Virgin Mary again and told Juan to collect roses and bring them to the Bishop as proof also she told him his uncle will recover from his sickness. After gathering roses, even while it was winter and not a suitable environment for roses, he brought them to the Bishop. As dozens of roses fell out of his cloak an image of the Virgin Mary was imprinted and visible on the inside of his cloak. Once the Bishop saw the proof he ordered that a church be built on Tepeyac Hill. (Encyclopedia, Britannica)…

The most appealing and controversial mysteries that has been around for centuries are UFOs. A UFO is an unidentified flying object seen in the sky that is believed to have no orthodox scientific explanation that can be found. The case of the Phoenix Lights is one of the intriguing and controversial UFO sightings on records. On the evening of March 13, 1997, thousands of people were outside waiting to see the spectacular Hale-Bopp Comet, until thousands of eyewitnesses reportedly seeing mysterious dots of lights spotted in the sky hovering over Phoenix, Arizona as the Hale-Bopp Comet passed over the sky. Thousands of eyewitnesses stated to have seen what is believed to be bright dots of lights that is a spacecraft formed into a V-shape. With thousands of reports of seeing what is believed to be a UFO spacecraft, the government quickly denied that the Phoenix Lights was the appearance of extraterrestrial. Instead, the United States Air Force stated that the lights were flares that…
The painting "Adoration of the Magi" by di Nardo portrays the three Magi approaching the baby Jesus and the Virgin Mary. However, there is much more to it than just this familiar scene from Judeo-Christian lore. When approaching this painting in order to analyze it iconographically, it is necessary to first look at all aspects of the form. If this aspect is ignored, it provides for an incomplete analysis of the painting. Once this is looked at, the iconography of the painting becomes much clearer, and it is easier to compare the painting to the actual biblical text from which it was derived (Gospel of St. Matthew 2:1 - 2:12).

When approaching the painting the first thing I noticed was the odd perspective. There are several vanishing points. Also, all of the figures seem to be placed on one plane. Because of this, the two figures that represent Jesus and Mary seem to be hovering weirdly above the ground. This, I believe, draws the viewer 's attention to these two figures, since they are the main focus of the painting.

Due to the influence of my culture, I recognized the figures as Jesus and Mary immediately. However, despite this, there are a few indicators as to who the people represented in the painting are. When viewing the painting, it is obvious that the figures of mother and child are the main point because the gazes of all of the people in the represented center on the child, including the mother 's. Also, the weird hovering effect also directs the viewer 's attention to these two figures. Both Mary and Jesus have halos, but this is not necessarily a distinguishing factor seeing as how there are also four other figures in the painting that have halos. However, the halo that surrounds the head of the baby Jesus has a slightly different pattern than those that the other figures possess. This lets you know that for whatever reason, this child is set apart from all other figures in the painting. So, even if the viewer is of another culture or…
In the short story, The Story of an Hour and the novel The Awakening, the author Kate Chopin uses the characters Mrs. Mallard and Edna to portray the lives of women in the 1800s. Both characters are very similar to one another, but the differences though a little abstract balance the similarities. Also the author uses nature to display both of the character’s feelings towards their dreams.…
Michelangelo and Verrocchio both have incredible artistic talents and show it in each of their David sculptures, yet they both convey a different meaning of David in their own ideal and using their own medium. Michelangelo and Verrocchio both represent David in different ways through the meaning they convey, the skills and techniques they use, and the beauty that they each portray . Michelangelo and Verrocchio are both artists from the city of Florence, Italy. In this piece both artists were trying to portray the biblical scene of David fighting Goliath, and winning. Their backgrounds have a major influence on the way they…
During our tour at the Legion of Honor, we observed art starting from the early and High Renaissance. Next, we went to the Dutch Baroque period, British art, and ended at the impressionists. A most notable work of art from the tour was “The Annunciation” by Master of the Retable of the Reyes Católicos. This oil on wood panel painting was created in the late 1500s, during the High Renaissance period of the art historical cannon. It portrays the biblical event found in the Gospel of Luke in which the archangel Gabriel announces to Mary that she is pregnant with Jesus, the son of God. “The Annunciation” is a religious painting and is an example of the many great works of art from the High Renaissance.…
Venus de Willendorf and Barbie are two very different representations of women and their beauty. Both are man-made and inspirational, both from two very different times. Venus by the homosapiens millions of years ago and Barbie a mere fifty years ago by a woman and mother looking for a doll her daughter could play and grow with. In looking at Venus de Willendorf and the Barbie doll, they seem to be related in a way and yet could not be any more different in appearance. In analyzing their culture and the time periods by which both were created, we learn a lot of who created them, what they stand for, how they are related and how they are different. As modern women, we put a lot into our appearances. From dying our hair, putting make-up on, use creams and serums, Botox, collagen injections, plastic surgery and so much more all to feel beautiful and attractive to those we desire and to avoid the unacceptable look by modern standards of Venus de Willendorf.…
The contrast between love and lust is drastic. Love is a hard thing to define but lust is a burning desire for another person, and it usually doesn’t last a very long time. Love can transform over years and still remain consistent. Lust is superficial when only the appearance is considered but nothing else, which can be called ‘love at first sight’. Lust is only a short-term relationship, whereas love leads to a deeper understanding of the other person and one develops affection and caring for them. Mercutio’s idea of love doesn’t involve commitment, is more realistic than Romeo’s view and Mercutio doesn’t allow love to inflict any pain. Romeo’s idea of love includes commitment, and has a deeper, more passionate love and he allows himself to be vulnerable to his emotions and lets them take over.…
Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet is considered to be one of the greatest love stories of all time. It is the tragic tale of two star crossed lovers; Romeo of the house of Montague and Juliet of the house of Capulet. Both houses have an ongoing feud with the other that had yet to be broken, until Romeo and Juliet fell desperately in love and were secretly married. Their relationship was doomed when Juliet’s cousin Tybalt and Romeo and his friend Mercutio ended up in a duel where Tybalt slayed Mercutio and Romeo Slayed Tybalt. In order to be together Juliet fakes her death and awaits Romeo to find her. Miscommunication occurs and in the end both lovers end up taking their own lives for love. Many adaptations of Shakespeare’s original story have been created but the most popular of that is West Side Story (music by Stephen Sondheim, Leonard Berstein and book by Arthur Laurents). In West Side Story we are introduced to two rival gangs; “the jets”( who are Caucasian) and ‘the Sharks” (who are immigrant Peurto Ricans). Both gangs are competing for power and control of the streets. Tony who is a retired Jet falls for Maria who is tied to “the Sharks”. Their love is instantaneous and would be rejected by all of society if anyone found out, so they keep it hidden. The two gangs decide to have on final rumble to determine the superior gang, however in the fight the two leaders end dying. Tony killed “the Sharks” leader and is forced to flee town, hopefully with Maria at his side. Before everything can work out Tony hears that Maria has been killed (which is not true) so he sets out to be killed himself. The play ends with Tony getting shot and dying in Maria’s arms. Both Romeo and Juilet and West Side Story have a lot in common as well as many differences. Although Maria and Juliet reflect each other in age and situation, there are many differences that give them unique distinction. West Side Story differs from Romeo and Juliet in personal…

Do I feel this piece of artwork as credibility, depends I would need more information?…
