From super evildoer Tom Buchanan, to a modernistic, rap party, the Great Gatsby, directed by Baz Luhrmann, contrasts the written version of the Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald in many ways. This contrast provided by the movie creates a different interpretation of the intended meaning and importance of the characters, scenes, and images in the written version. This is evident through the emphasis or importance of certain characters and the relationships between some characters, the modern, rap-filled soundtrack of the movie and the placement of those songs, and the different portrayal of Daisy and Tom Buchanan. In addition, the movie adaptation also leaves out a few important scenes that deem necessary to the plot. The movie and book relate in many ways, but it’s the small changes from the text to the movie that affect the interpretation that someone may have. The significance of changing the interpretation is that it can spin a new meaning and way of thinking about the content of the text or movie.…

In the play Romeo and Juliet, Shakespeare uses a metaphor to figuratively express Romeo’s feelings of sadness from his heart being broken by Rosaline. During Act 1, scene 4, Romeo and his friends were “invited” to a capulet’s party. Romeo was in a state of sorrow because Rosaline turn down his love. Mercutio wants to comfort him and lift his spirit. Mercutio asked Romeo to dance, but Romeo did not move an inch and tells Mercutio, “Not I, believe me. You have dancing shoes with nimble soles; I have a soul of lead so stakes me to the ground I cannot move”(Shakespeare 805). Romeo’s shoes were compared to lead. The metaphor is most effective because it directly compares the two nouns giving the readers a better understanding of what is happening.…

A number of people have assisted me throughout the journey of completing this research, and deserve my thanks. To my supervisor, mentor and friend Professor Barry Fallon, to whom I owe a great debt. His support has been unwavering, and his encouragement and generosity have been constant. Because of him I have learned an immeasurable amount about the research process, and about my own strengths. For all of this Barry, a heartfelt thank you. A big thank you to my family, who have walked this road with me. Their love and support are unconditional, and they have gone above and beyond the call of duty many a time in efforts to help. Thank you for cheering me on and encouraging me from the sidelines at every step, it has meant the world to me. A special thank you to my grandmother for her love and support – one of your last wishes was to see me complete this process. You may no longer be here in person, but I did it, and I know you are smiling. To all my wonderful friends, thank you for your friendship, and for always being there. While they have all played an integral part in my life, and have supported me on this journey, there are some special mentions. A special thanks to Carli Growcott, for her constant friendship, support and encouragement. Carli, you have been there at every turn, and have supported me when I have most needed it - thank you. This book is a combined efforts of a lot of people & also things. First & foremost I would like to thank my dearest parents, & then my friends (because all the sMs here are forwarded by them only, so I think they should be thanked first !) & then there are some of my relatives too who have sent me messages & then if I continue I would certainly won’t have enough money to publish rest of my book. Also secondly I would thank my whole skeleton that includes all my body parts (especially my hands) who co-operated me a lot while doing these activities. Lastly there is someone or rather something which is the most important i.e. my laptop & cellphone without which I wouldn’t even have dreamed of issuing such a book.…
