The Magna Carta is a document written to let the English people have freedom, liberty, and prosperity. It was written originally as a peace treaty for the English King John 1. The king was faced with civil war from the nobles, otherwise known as the barons. They wanted lower taxes and other freedoms from the king. He wanted to rule as a tyrant. This eventually caused an uproar within the civilization. Creating the document we know today as the “Magna Carta”.
King John 1 was a tyrant and selfish man. He ran his kingdom through high taxes and high demands of his people. He competed against his nephew Arthur for the thrown, and won. King John 1 took over France winning his right to the throne. Soon after almost all of his supporters despised him for his cruel and unusual punishments to his prisoners, including his nephew Arthur. to the excommunication of the king. He was the first king of England to be excommunicated from the church. Soon after he was at war with France again, and needed the help from the barons. He demanded the barons pay higher taxes because of the war. The barons were planning a revolt against the king.
The barons wanted lower taxes and freedom from the excessive ruling of the king.
The Archbishop Stephen Langton gathered the barons concerns and started writing a document called the “Article of Barons”. In this document it had 37 laws and demanded the rights of the English elite. It stated that the king was to give the barons freedom from taxation and other discriminations. It gave the barons justification over their land and rights. It made it so no man was outside the laws. King John 1 after finally signed the Magna Carta, facing a civil war from the barons and the English people. He signed the “The Articles of Barons” on June 10, 1215. After altering the first document five days later it became “The Magna Carta” on June 15, 1215. Though this didn’t work in favor of the king. A few months later a civil war broke out in England. The Magna Carta was not effective immediately in the English territory, and had no rights for middle class
citizens.
The Magna Carta is a collection of 37 English laws. It was revised a total of 63 times after the initial document was signed. It laid the grounds for our modern day constitution. The first colonies of the America’s used the Magna Carta to separate them from English ruling. The Magna Carta was a building block for our Constitution.
