Homosexuality has been common across cultures in the world though the term was first coined by a German Doctor in 1869.The term gay and lesbian came as later development from the sexual behavior of same sex relationships. But the same has never been accepted in any society of the world even though there are traces of such practice that goes on off the curtain including India. Sherry Joseph through his study made an attempt to understand the
Indian Gay and Lesbian movement through the wider perspectives of identity politics. In an era of gay and lesbian marginalisation, the homosexual immigrants of Indian subcontinent demanded in Britain and America:
An agenda within a racist climate different from the agenda imposed by white gays and lesbians. The impact of colonial history and concepts of orientalism upon world- views and perceptions has played a central role in how non white people have been defined…Silenced in both south Asian patriarchal societies and the white gay communities in America and Europe, the south Asian gays and lesbians have had to invent themes, often with new terms of identification (2228).
The identification of one‟s sexual behaviour is again the product of the western ideology as the entire West rests on Christian values as their prime ideological moorings. In post colonial era scholars of the empire began to deliberate on a new terminology that can be conveniently used to identify people not preferring to be heterosexual. Thus came, the term alternate sexualities mainly as “an attempt to decolonize the general notion and establish the existence of various expressions of sexualities surrounding scriptures, arts, life histories

Throughout history there have been many different theories of sexuality developed. Two well-known philosophers, Freud and Beauvoir have created their own ideas of what sexuality is and the ways in which it developed. These two different philosophers have created theories that can be compared and contrasted in ways in which makes one think about their own beliefs of sexuality. These two philosophers biggest difference is in the way in which they view feminine sexuality. In this paper I will compare and contrast the theories of Freud and Beauvoir and explain why I agree with Beauvoir’s understanding of sexuality more than I agree with Freud’s.…

In “The Pathology of White Privilege”, Tim Wise presents the idea of white privilege, explains how it came about, and tries to enlighten others on the damage it can do not only to people of color, but to white people as well. Wise, a white man himself, begins the lecture by talking about the absence of race in politics and culture. He points out that political candidates in the United States will talk about many issues such as poverty and healthcare, but leave out any issue of race, racism, discrimination, racial oppression, or white privilege and the roles they might play in regard to the particular issues they do choose to talk about. He makes the argument that the ignoring of these issues makes them seem unimportant or nonexistent and simply “feeds the denial that is already far too prevalent among the white community.” He goes on to explain that white people are quick to admit that racial discrimination used to be a problem, yet only six percent believe it is a serious problem…

In his article, From Identity to Politics, Craig Rimmerman analyzes gay rights movements in the United States in order to discover whether it is feasible to connect identity concerns with a liberal coalition for social, political and sex inequalities. Progressive democracy has provided some lesbian and gay rights; however, they are limited. Gay rights continue to be the focus of political efforts to promote social change through lesbian and gay movements in the United States. Rimmerman also focuses on the different ways gays and lesbians brought the AIDS epidemic to attention.…

These same tactics are applicable to early sexuality, as Somerville’s essay “Scientific Racism and the Emergence of the Homosexual Body” shows (17). Somerville’s essay explores the sexology dialogs of the early 1900s using the racial ideologies of the time. She [Somerville] claims that the tools used to distinguish race were also applied to sexology in three key ways (18).…

Since the first time race was applied to humans in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, there has been a common pattern that sees people not having a western European background as different (Steckley, 2014). Steckley (2014) defines discrimination as the action of treating individuals differently because of their race. Stereotypes are overstated generalized descriptions made about a race or group (Steckley, 2014). Prejudice and stereotypes are closely related in the sense that prejudice involves having a pre-judge perception about a race (Steckley, 2014). Racism on the other hand is formed when a certain group creates a stereotype about a race, which leads to the construction of prejudice regarding that race, and inevitably discrimination towards the race (Steckley, 2014). Racism is institutionalized when racism becomes ingrained into the system, in terms of laws and practices (Steckley, 2014).…

My reaction to this conceptual framework is that it makes an assumption that because a person is white, that they must present with one of these four temporary ‘faces’. I suppose my background and upbringing and family make-up make it very difficult to comprehend this. Since I was raised in a military family around other military families of all colors and I had a black uncle and a gay uncle, it is difficult to find out where I am in this transformative process. I don’t fit neatly into any of the four faces listed in the article. I would have to create my own face. One that was brought up to be a critical democrat already with a shade of missionary and a shade of intellectualizer.…

For many decades racism has become a major issue that has affected many people in negative ways. Many people may not realize the notion of racism and how big of a problem it is within our society today, because of the assumptions that we make on each other. From previous generations, to now racism has affected whites and blacks in many ways. Many ways such as income, jobs, crime rates, education and more. Privileges towards whites has affected blacks in many ways. Within society today whites are showered more with many privileges than what blacks are. In the following paper I will argue the invisibility amongst blacks and how the visibility of whites is always spoken upon society. Privilege is important because it shows the positive advantages…

“Stereotypes and Slippery slopes were another way DuBois approaches cultural oppression. “Stereotypes rely on categorizing large groups of people in particular ways even without any personal knowledge or experience with group members. Attributes become rigidly held and contradictory information is dismissed or discredited.” (Erikson, 2014: class notes) Society influences stereotypes and the way people perceive others. Dubois talks about the way society uses the term white and how it refers to everything that is good, pure, and decent. In contrast the term black refers to everything that is despicable, ignorant, and that instill fear. (Allan, 2011)” (Booker, 2014)…

Homosexuality has been a hot topic for the last fifty or so years, as it has been at various times in the past. There are different theories pertaining to the history of homosexuality. Essentialists say it has existed in all times and cultures, while social constructionists believe that it has arisen only in certain places and eras (ancient Greece, for instance) (Bailey 54). Its social acceptability has varied widely as well. The stigma of non-heterosexuality has faded considerably in the twenty-first century. Psychology no longer views homosexuality, bisexuality, and transexuality through a lens of pathology, instead recognizing that lesbians, gay men, bisexuals, and transgenders (collectively referred to as LGBT individuals) have particular issues related to their minority status and the ways in which they are viewed by American society (Garnets and Kimmel, Introduction 2). Formation of an identity that is faithful to the self rather than formed according to societal expectations is now encouraged and recognized as healthy. Nonetheless, many in the heterosexual population are not fully informed about homosexuality and struggle to understand how the needs and outlooks of their LGBT neighbors differ from their own. This paper looks at several aspects of the lives of LGBT individuals, and argues that equal rights for this community have yet to be achieved in this country.…

Racism comes in multiple forms all of which can be overt or covert. Examples of such forms include Cultural that is the cultural images and messages that assert the dominance of whites and the supposed inferiority of people of color. Another example is that of Institutional racism which is formal practices and traditions in social organizations that harm or deny the same opportunities for some racial groups as others. Over time much of the racism exemplified in the aforementioned forms has become covert as many have come to believe that racism is not an issue any more. However, racism is as big an issue as it always has been due as a whole to the fact that ‘white’ is not considered to be a racial identity. This simple fact is the key to unlocking all of racism and white privilege.…

Thesis Statement: The Gay Rights Movement dates back to the 19th century. By 1970 gay and lesbian organizations existed all over the United States and in other countries all over the world. Some supporters of the movement would say that our society as a whole has made great strides towards acceptance of homosexuality. However, gays and lesbians are still fighting for equality in 2009. The issues are vast and widespread, with same-sex marriage at the top of the list. In the world that we live in today one might be surprised to learn how many countries are accepting of gay and lesbians, as well as how many are not. The world has made progress within the last decade regarding this issue, but definitely not enough. We need to take steps to protect and balance Gay rights.…
