Concert: Mahler’s Third Symphony as conducted by Gustavo Dudamel
Music is simply described as art. It is contextualised as aural art that encompasses a temporal attribute. Each composition of the art form is made up of notes of different pitches creating melody and harmony played at different tempos, meter and rhythm. The genre of music that allows one to effectively experience all that pertains to music composition is most definitely classical music. Classic music is composed of an agglomeration of different music instruments played with different techniques; with each instrument being played at the same note but at different timbres.

Mahler’s composition is simple to understand. This is because its Sonata Allegro is simple to fathom. A Sonata Allegro is a structural form that is composed of the exposition, development and the recapitulation. The implication of this is that the exposition introduces the theme of the song while the development section, as is ostensible, develops the song.
Following this, one is able to understand the mood and the storyline behind the song. A good example of a composition that adheres to this theme is Richard Wagner’s overtures and
Samuel Barber’s adagio for strings. The mood and storyline in the latter is a sombre one.
From its exposition to development to recapitulation, a listener can easily relate with the music. Mahler’s composition, the third symphony, as conducted by Dudamel starts at a low tempo and pitch. The tempo and pitch at times get so unbelievably low that one would assume that no instrument is being played. However, as it progresses, the composition picks up its tempo but the pitch still remains moderately low. The cycle is repeated for a better part

His fluid style and his abilities allowed him to accurately lead the orchestra through the low pitch and slow tempo of the composition and into the slightly faster and louder sections of the composition. The effect of this was that the orchestra relaxed and trusted Dudamels’s expertise and thus produced angelic music.
I enjoyed the composition for it told a story through the Sonata Allegro structure: a composition allows one to follow the compositions as it is played as opposed to a composition where one is fixated on trying to understand it rather than to enjoy it. It is for this reason that my all-time favourite compositions still remain to be Ludwig Beethoven’s
Symphony number 9 and flower duets Lakme by Leo Delibes as performed by Anna
Netrebko and Elina Garanca. Be that as it may, Mahler’s composition did not enthral my interest. The composition was too long and too low. I kept getting lost throughout the composition. Despite this, my all-time favourite conductors still remains Dudamel for he represents the younger generation of conductors. As a conductor he has achieved quite a lot for a man his age. It is for this reason that he inspires our generation to dream

The second piece I am going to discuss is the Symphony No.2 in D Minor, Op. 36 composed by Ludwig van Beethoven(1770-1827). It was in the Classical period, and the genre of it is Symphony because of it had four movements. The first movement is in the Adagio molto form, the second movement is in the Larghetto form, the third movement is in the Scherzo: Allegro form which breaks the rule of most of symphonies, and the fourth movement is in the Allegro molto form. The length of the work is about thirty-five minutes and…

The emotional journey of this great masterpiece continues within the second and third movement by bringing the listener back to feelings of calmness and sweet flowing melodic lines. This significant contrast from the first movement creates within an individual a sense of peace and tranquility that allows for the listener the opportunity to further enwrap themselves in the musical emotion of the piece. As the piece continues, this dolce expression crescendos with a melodic playfulness throughout the rest of the second movement and into the third movement taking the listener.…

During the Great Age of Vienna, there were four predominant music styles, being Baroque, Classical, Romantic, and 20th Century. The Classical period, lasting from around 1750 to 1820, is very well-known. It was named for the admiration and appreciation of classic art and literature from centuries ago. Many people around the world are familiar with the Classical period, as it is extremely well-known for its extraordinary talented and famous composers and performers. Some of these famous Viennese performers and composers include but are not limited to: Mozart, Beethoven, Haydn, Schubert and Gluck. This style’s form differs greatly from the form of its predecessor, Baroque. Unlike Baroque, Classical music established many musical advances that still stand strong today, including norms of…

The first section of the exposition in the Mozart (which for the remainder of the paper the piece will be referred to “the Mozart”) is in Bb major. The first subject is split into 8 bar phrases. The first phrase acts more like an introduction to the second part of the first subject. The first two bars act like mini cadences. They go as follows: I – vii – I. This is followed by another two bars that also act like mini cadences, however, they don't set any sort of primary ideas. Their little motif ideas merely allow the composer an easier transition into repeating the first two bars. Naturally, Mozart does that by not only repeating the first two bars but also putting it down an octave. He finishes up this first phrase by bring in a new motivic idea and then setting up an rhythmic ostinato to help get into the second phrase of…

Music is considered as the “mirror of the soul”. Ever since the dawn of time, music has been a part of human life in terms of motivation, thinking, relieving emotional stress and the like. Classical music, the use of different instruments such as the works of the mentors - Vivaldi, Bach, Mozart, Beethoven and Tchaikovsky are some of the greatest composers that man has ever known. In this paper, Beethoven and Mozart will be given more preference. In studying and reading about their lives, their environment during those times, the relationship toward their relatives and their trials as musicians will give us a background about their masterpieces. Just like in the art of painting, Van Gogh and Picasso were artistic genius of their times, so also were Mozart and Beethoven masters of their trade. Music is all around us and is prevalent in every bit of nature, from the whirling of the wind, the sound of a tide, the flow of a river or even something as simple as drops of rain. Music is the best medicine for our body and soul.…

The creation, performance, significance, and even the definition of music vary according to culture and social context. Music can be divided into genres and subgenres, although the dividing lines and relationships between music genres are often subtle, sometimes open to individual interpretation, and occasionally controversial. And a music genre is a conventional category that identifies pieces of music as belonging to a shared tradition or set of conventions.
