Exploratory Essay Human trafficking and mail order brides are big phenomenons in the world that people don’t really think about. People suffer from abuse, physically and mentally, being forced to do service that they do not want to do and by being oblivious to the people that they will encounter.
Human trafficking is a form of slavery, known as “modern day slavery.” Trafficking consists of labor, domestic, and sexual work. There are approximately 2.4 million victims of human trafficking and about 1.5 million of these victims are sex slaves. Half of the number of sex slaves are in Asia, mainly in Thailand. In Thailand, this illegal act is a very common issue, with males females, and even children. In the documentary, …show more content…
Enslaved: Thailand – Human Trafficking, A trafficker by the name of Thuong spoke on the issue of human trafficking. A trafficker is a seller who promotes or exchanges goods or services for money Thuong described the type of people they go for, in the industry by saying, “Our main targets are country people who have little knowledge of the law, and whose family situations are difficult with little money to live on.” The traffickers often manipulate people into the business by offering good job opportunities to people who are vulnerable and desperate to find a better life for themselves as well as their families. Many of these victims do their duties and do not receive pay, regardless of the amount of time they have been working. If they refused, they would get beaten and tortured. Some of the traffickers, mainly the sex traffickers, held their workers to debt bondage, an arrangement where a person is forced to pay off a loan with direct labor in place of currency over an agreed or obscure period of time. Victims are enslaved until their debt is fully paid off.
Mail-order brides are women who put themselves in “catalogs’ to be bought by foreign men and become their wives.
This became very popular in the 1800s, during frontier America. The men found better jobs in the West. They would write letters to churches and publish personal ads in magazines and newspapers, stating that they were looking for a wife. Women responded with letters and pictures of themselves. During this time period, they were known as “Picture Brides”. Today, there are many services, online and actual catalog, that are for mail-order brides. This service takes place all over the world, but is focused mainly in Asia and Europe. Many men in Europe and America go through mail order bride services and look for Thai women to be their wives. Western men don’t like the feminist ways of western women. In the documentary, Bride Trafficking Unveiled, western men go through the bride service because they like having power, and women were raised to be “good wives”, which means to be obedient to their husbands. In the documentary, it was said that Thai women look to western men as “gods.” Many women want to become mail order brides because they fantasize about an ideal family that they see in magazines and on TV. Women are oblivious to what they would receive when they marry the western men. A woman by the name of Di stated that she heard a lot of negative things about being a bride such as women being beaten, tortured, being personal sex slaves, and even being killed. After
knowing the dangers of being a bride, women still want to go through with the service because of hope for a better life. There has been a controversial question that has yet to be answered, is the mail order bride service human trafficking? Many people believe that the bride service is a form of trafficking and others believe that it’s not. Several people who commented on Bride Trafficking Unveiled seemed to think that the title was misleading because in order for it to be a form of trafficking, the women would have to be doing this against their will, and they’re not. Other reasons why people believe that it’s not a form of trafficking are because it’s completely legal and majority of the marriages are successful. Reasons why people believe that the bride service is a form of trafficking are because women are being sold, they are oblivious to the men that they will be marrying, and there have been many cases of abuse towards the women. In my opinion, women shouldn’t be sold for profit. So, I believe that the service is a form of trafficking, it’s just a legal form.
