Maine Studies
Maine’s geography affects population distribution and employment opportunities because we have a coast next to the ocean. This means that we have the opportunity to be able to fish and lobster where as if we lived in another state not near the coast we wouldn’t be able to employ or have the opportunity to do this. We are quite fortunate for this but it also brings some challenges. One being that we have a certain amount of time to catch all the fish and lobster that is needed. There is a tight schedule due to the seasons changing and there is only a set amount of time to catch what is needed. The thing about Maine that gives it it’s greatest advantage is that it is the closest to Europe.
Maine Native Americans and immigrants contributed to the political identity of the state. They have contributed to our state because ever since english settlers came over and founded Maine there are have always been english, french, and native americans living here. Our state’s population today consist mostly of french and english people, while we still have native americans here it mostly consists of those two heritages. So Native Americans and other immigrants have contributed to Maine’s political identity because they have always lived here so Maine is the way it is today because what has happened in the past. Available resources influence the kinds of industries in Maine, as well as their development and or decline because it’s a supply and demand deal. In Maine we use what we have available to us. We try to reduce waste and recycle what we have. The resources that we will never run out of is water which is a very great resource. We will always, always need water. It provides not only something we need to survive but also electricity. When a resource begins to run out the an industry may start to decline till they come up with an alternative. Industries begin to conquer when they have more than enough of the available resource.

The economies of the colonies of Massachusetts and Virginia were centered around different resources, but each colony flourished in its own way. Virginia centered around the fact that land was plentiful, but labor was scarce. Many landowners had large portions of land but not enough workers to cultivate it. In Massachusetts, the land was not fertile so their economy centered around the fishing and ship making industries. Therefore, Massachusetts’s most profitable resources were timber and fishing. Land was less fertile in Massachusetts due to the harsh climate and short growing season. One thing that helped Massachusetts economy was that they could also take out the “middle man” when trading by using their own ships and merchants. Due to the fertile land in Virginia, their most profitable resource was tobacco. Virginia’s land was fertile due to the warm climate and immense rainfall. Virginia had plenty of staples to exchange for English goods. The Massachusetts colony had a lack of staples for exchange,…

All of the new ideas and cultures brought in from these emigrants would be passed down through generations, forming who we are as a society today. Although New England and the Chesapeake region were both settled largely by the people of English origin, by 1700 the regions had evolved into two distinct societies. The reasons for this distinct development were mostly based on the type on people from England who chose to settle in the two areas, and on the manner in which the areas were settled.

New England was a refuge for religious separatists leaving England, while people who immigrated to the Chesapeake region had no religious motives. As a result, New England formed a much more religious society then the Chesapeake region. John Winthrop states that their goal was to form "a city upon a hill", which represented a "pure" community, where Christianity would be pursued in the most correct manner. Both the Pilgrims and the Puritans were very religious people. In both cases, the local government was controlled by the same people who controlled the church, and the bible was the basis for all laws and regulations. From the Article of Agreement, Springfield, Massachusetts it is clear that religion was the basis for general laws. It uses the phrase "being by God's providence engaged together to make a plantation", showing that everything was done in God's name. The Wage and Price Regulations in Connecticut is an example of common laws being justified by the bible. Also in this document the word "community " is emphasized, just as Winthrop emphasizes it saying: "we must be knit together in this work as one man". The immigrants to New England formed very family and religiously oriented communities. Looking at the emigrant lists of people bound for New England it is easy to observe that most people came in large families, and large families support the community atmosphere. There were many children among the emigrants, and those children were taught religion from their early childhood, and therefore grew up loyal to the church, and easily controllable by the same. Any deviants from the regime were silenced or…
