Makeover Day Research Paper
I have the word “sorry!” written across my forehead in black eyeliner, complementing the red lipstick halfway down my chin, and of course, the purple eyeshadow that is amateurishly applied all over my face. This is not just your average Monday, nor is it your average makeover, because I am at Camp Kanata. It is the infamous “Makeover Monday” in Daisy town. As a counselor to the youngest girls at camp, or the “Daisies,” I spend each of my summer Mondays sitting in a foldout chair while forty or so eager girls, aged six through ten, attack the faces of my co-counselors and I with old makeup and paint our nails haphazardly. Why would we let ourselves be subjected to this kind of madness? The answer is simple, because it’s fun. You might ask how letting ten year olds draw all over your face with old, crusty makeup is fun, but in a way, it’s like how math is fun to mathematicians, or how running is fun for cross country athletes. To myself, and other counselors alike, hanging out with kids and being able to be silly and poke fun at ourselves is our kind of fun. By nature we are people pleasers and our people are our campers.

I know the memories I help these campers create through their limited time at camp can have the same lasting impact on them as it did on me.
I’ve realized through my experience at camp, I’m someone who strives to help others achieve their goals, whether that is cheering on my campers as they climb the daunting alpine tower to obtain their “gold rank,” or simply helping them find the right colors for their bead bracelet. I’ve decided to channel this energy of helping others into an education major where I’ll be able to not only teach children about a subject I love, but help them discover their own passions and

I made the campers I helped ecstatic throughout the day. I believe the other staff and I made campers want to come to camp every single day of the summer. In addition, I believe all of the CITs helped the head of the camp tremendously. He told us when we were all finished how much we all helped him this summer. He told us he could not have gone through it without us. This experience should pave my way into a life of helping other young and…

From there, I hope to study to be accepted into medical school and specialize in pediatrics. When preparing for medical school, the advice one hears are to become a well-rounded student. Through my DECA experiences I have been able to develop leadership skills that will help me thrive in my future. Over the three years I have been involved, I have stepped out my comfort zone and made a difference in my local DECA chapter, community, and my future. Now taking the responsibility of being a DECA officer, as the chapter president, has allowed me to continue to grow and develop my leadership, communication, and social skills. Working with the Milan DECA Chapter members has proven how difficult and enjoyable being a leader is. At times leading so many events can be stressful; however, the completion of the events pushes me further. In order to reach the goal of becoming ‘well-rounded’, I used DECA skills to organize my time to join other extracurriculars within my community. Along with DECA, I participate in 4-H which is a non-profit organization in counties all across the nation that prepares youth to make a positive impact on their communities. Furthermore, I lead my 4-H club in a Relay For Life team through the American Cancer Society. Additionally, I am a dedicated musician, drum major, and the first Milan High School Flute Choir Director. I am an active participant in the peer education program at Milan High School. I am so thankful for the opportunities to be a leader within my class, school, community, county, and…

When I first applied to colleges, I applied under the notion that I was going to become a police officer. I was going to get my Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice, take the police exam, and become a detective. Over time, however, I was able to take a variety of courses that would change my life forever. One of the classes that I particularly enjoyed was Child and Elder Abuse. Having worked with children in high school, volunteering at my school and church, as well as having a case worker instructor, my interest in youth care skyrocketed. In the class, I learned about the warning signs of abuse, how to write 51A’s and the step by step process of investigating complaints. From then on, my interests began to shift.…

I was inspired to work within the field of education by several individuals within my family that have gone on and receive bachelor’s degrees, masters and even doctoral degrees. That has given me the drive to become a teacher; an African-American male teacher who did not have a good up-bringing and who is able to make a difference for those that maybe walking down the same path as I did. Furthermore, I believe I belong here at Bethune-Cookman University because it has been invested within me and I am a diamond…

In tenth grade, I went on a missions trip with my church to Mink Lake, which is a camp by the Gunflint Trail in northern Minnesota. During the missions trip, we prepared a camp for the summer. Some of my personal jobs were to help clean out two sheds and reorganize them, haul logs, and trim trees all over the camp. The trip benefitted myself and the other people on the missions trip because we were able to help people have a fun experience at camp over the summer, and we also helped the people running the camp to not have to work so hard to prepare the camp for the summer campers. Another reason it was a good experience for all of us workers is because we did not have our cell phones, so we were able to form new relationships with each other since we were not constantly distracted by our…

My professional goal is to become a teacher with hard work and dedication I know I can reach my lifetime goal. For my extra-curricular activities, I have attended the Head Start at Brookhaven Community College where I have volunteered over thirty hours in a semester to get myself prepared for the profession. Going to the local Head Start gave me the opportunity to see if this is really what I want to do for many years. I put myself in a position where I actually enjoyed what I was doing, I had patience which a lot of people don’t have to teach younger kids. I worked with three to five years old, I had to show them I was the leader. In my four years of High School, I have taken my time out to be a leader in my school. I was vice-president freshman…

Just as the AP course positively impacted me, with the assistance of the Woodford R. Porter Scholarship, I know I can have the same impact on the University of Louisville community. At the University of Louisville, I hope to earn my degree in chemical engineering. I do understand that this degree requires a lot of knowledge about mathematics. Because I was able to overcome difficult academic situations in high schools, I know I am better prepared to deal with these challenges in college. Furthermore, my experiences of struggling in my AP courses have helped me become more sympathetic to my peers. If I see one of my peers struggling, I will provide assistance to them because I know how hard it is to ask for help. By working with my peers, we can ultimately develop a friendship inside and outside the classroom. By developing these relationships, we can learn from one another. While I cannot change my peers’ perspectives about certain issues, I can introduce them to a new perspective, my perspective. By introducing my peers to my perspective, I have helped them become more self-aware as they can do the same for me. In essence, by attending the University of Louisville, I know I can uphold the University’s mission by improving my peers’ lives by sharing my own lived experiences in classrooms. By sharing my narrative and experiences, I know I will create a more diverse…

Another reason I wish to join Teach For America is because I miss the classroom. As an Education minor in college, I have over 100 hours of in-field experience teaching in the classroom. Since my first field experience in a fifth grade classroom, I have longed to see my own students’ smiles when they understand a concept for the first time or to help them when they become frustrated with a problem they do not think they will be able to solve. During one of my student-teaching experiences, I helped students create their own stories, and seeing the fun that they had creating their own worlds made me realize that teaching was something that I wanted to do in the coming years after.…
