A makeup artist creates the look and prosthetics for most theatrical and televised productions, including the modeling world. They are extremely well paid specialists, especially in the modeling and photography world, due to the artist’s ability to display a face to its full potential, as well as to establish a working relationship with the person receiving the makeover. Salon makeup is the foundation of all types of makeup applications and the first type. When an artist learns salon makeup, they learn how to make someone look his or her absolute best. This process can include using highlights to draw attention to a particular part of the face, and shadows to take attention away. “An example of this would be someone with a large forehead outlining their forehead with a darker foundation to minimize the appearance of the size of the forehead” ("Makeup Artist Profession."). Special effects makeup is the most difficult of all makeup because it often requires the production of prosthetic pieces for the actors. With this type of makeup, days of pre-production prep time is needed if using prosthetics. Related to special effects makeup is motion picture makeup, the fifth type of makeup. This type of application covers a wide spectrum of differences; from straight makeup to character makeup. Straight makeup is making someone have a look of health, which is how movie characters are able to get out of bed looking clean and radiant, or how a thirty year old can look eighteen again. Character makeup would also include making a young man look twenty years older and then another twenty years old throughout the course of a movie.
