Malala Yousafzai was born on July 12, 1997 in Mingora, a town in the Swat District of North-West Pakistan. She’s the daughter of education activist, Ziauddin Yousafzai, who ran a school in the Swat District. Growing up in Pakistan, which has the second highest number of out of school children in the world, inspired her to stand up for children’s right to an education. It didn’t take much for her to realize that her destiny was to advocate for the rights of girls’ education. At this event she gave a speech entitled “How Dare the Taliban Take Away My Basic Right to an Education.” After her speech, the leader of the Taliban, Mullah Fazlullah closed all girls’ schools on January 15, 2009. When asked by BBC Urdu to write about life living under the Taliban, Malala accepted; her first post appeared on January 3, 2009 under the name of Gul Makai. This became her milestone into taking a stand against the Talibans. On December 1, 2008 Malala’s father announced that she was the blogger for BBC. On October 1, 2011, she was nominated for the International Children’s Peace Prize. Malala becomes the youngest person to ever win a Nobel Peace Prize. During that same year, she also won the Pakistan’s National Youth Peace Prize on December 1. 2011.
As she began advocating for girl’s education, the Taliban had issued several death threats against her. On October 9, 2012 on her way home from school, a gunman boarded the school bus and shot Malala in the head and neck. While being treated in Birmingham, England, it didn’t take long for a global outrage. While still in recovery for her wounds, Pakistan’s President Asif Ali Zardari established an education fund of $10 million under Malala’s name.
