Have you ever gone to school, even though you are putting yourself in danger? Malala Yousafzai was born on July 12, 1997 in Mingora, Pakistan. This is where she faced harsh restrictions of education, music, television, and even shopping. On October 9, 2012 Malala was shot in the head by a Taliban gunman on her way home from school. She was transferred to a hospital in Great Britain and three weeks after her near death experience she requested her school books. She stated “I thought that words and books and pens were more powerful than guns.’’

Around this time, the Taliban had begun threatening to close girl schools. Her father, Ziauddin had started receiving death threats since he owned a school for girls. Even though Ziauddin and Malala’s life was at jeopardy, they continued fighting for girls education. She even began speaking in public and on live television. These actions caused the Taliban to target her and want her dead.
Malala is not only a Women’s Rights Activist and the voice for children, education, and women right’s but also the youngest person ever to win the Nobel Peace Prize. The National Youth Peace Prize was also renamed in her honor. It is now known as the National Malala Peace Prize. Without all of Malala’s contributions, the amount of educated girls would not be the same as it is today.
