Following his departure from The Nation of Islam he traveled the world and went on a pilgrimage to Mecca, where he was moved by the peace around him. He felt more confident in a peaceful movement. On February 21, 1965 while preparing to deliver a speech Malcolm X was assassinated.
A year after his death, Marvel debuted The first African superhero in The Fantastic Four, their bestselling comic. The character is the leader and protector of a fictitious African country and works under the alias of The Black Panther.
What was originally just a cool superhero
name got a new reputation when The Black Panther Party was founded in 1966. The party was inspired by Malcolm X’s original teachings, to achieve equality by any means necessary.
The Black Panthers set up community programs for education and to provide food to families. They also worked to arm African American’s which provided protection from violence against individuals. The latter led to them being labeled as a terrorist organization.
This reputation led to the worry that The Black Panther superhero was associated with The Black Panther Party, leading him to briefly change his name to The Black Leopard to avoid confusion.
