The propose of this book is to provide a summary of the life of Malcolm X and his role in American history. The role of racism and its affect on Malcolm, his response to racism, and how his experiences affect his response to racism is documented. Malcolm X was born in Nebraska and moved to Michigan. After his father is assassinated and his mother is put in a mental hospital Malcolm is put in a foster home. He leaves his foster family to live with his sister and falls into a life of crime. Once he is sent to prison he reforms himself and converts to Islam. Upon exiting prison he becomes an instrumental character in the Nation of Islam and provides a driving for for the black community to push towards unification and strength as a people. Autobiographies are written to provide the life story of a person, in their own words, for others to see and known their experiences and how they influenced them and how their path in life unfolded. Malcolm X is showcasing how his life and its experiences influenced and helped evolve his points of view on the condition of black people and who or what caused this poor condition. This evolution shaped the way he was able to provide and express solutions for the problem to the nation. I chose to read this book because I know that Malcolm X was one of the instrumental leaders in the improvement of the black condition in America. I read this book in high school and in the wake of the recent trials where people are claiming civil rights, Trayvon Martin and Michael Brown for example, I wanted to read again about the plight of the African-American community and how they have improved and
