Think about it

Malcom Gladwell defines connectors in his book “Tipping Point” as: “These people connect ideas and concepts. Their social networks are 100 people or more. They can often reach across industries and other traditional socioeconomic boundaries.” Whether we agree with Gladwell’s revolutionary concepts or not, we cannot deny it changed the way we think. If we want to translate Gladwell’s term “connectors” to a much simpler word, it would be “ the middle man.” For centuries, people created jobs by being the middleman, such as: car dealers, brokers, headhunters, consultants, etc. Today, the same concept invaded the digital world. Social media, pioneering the digital industry, has become a vital element in the success of any brand.

Long gone are the days where TV and radio spots are the influential touch points. Who wants to pay thousands of dollars for a quarter page in the morning paper, when he can reach double the audience on social media, and for fraction the price? But how can a brand create an epidemic on social media? What platform is right for its message? How does it get people to retweet the message? Regram the picture? And reshare the post? Simple. It goes to Niche! Niche connects corporations and brands to the stars of social media. In other words, it connects them to the trendsetters on Instagram, Vine, Twitter, YouTube, etc. It connects the advertisers with the “connectors” of social …show more content…

How does it work exactly?

Niche pairs up advertisers (brands, corporations, agencies etc.) with the influencers on Instagram, YouTube, Twitter, etc. These selected influencers make Vines, Instagram pictures, YouTube videos and other various social content for a certain message the brand selects for them. After the brand approves of the social media content, the influencers share it with their followers. The result is usually an engaging piece of branded content, and sometimes picks up virally.     In this section, Gladwell emphasises how cultural legacies operate as strong forces. He starts with the history of the small town situated on the Appalachian mountains of Kentucky, called Harlan. It was founded by eight immigrant families from the northern region of British Isles in the early nineteenth century. The first settlers were herders and this region was cut off from the rest of the state because of its tough accessibility. The town was always thinly populated never crossing the population mark of ten thousand people in its early history.     Malcolm Gladwell's book The Tipping Point offers a fascinating and insightful way to think about the issue of epidemics. Those elements Gladwell believes are the basis for why epidemics start allows the reader to think about their world in a way they never thought they could. I would not have thought of Sesame Street or Blue's clues as being defined as epidemics. When one thinks of an epidemic, one thinks of AIDS, or some form of disease so widespread that it must be contained and a cure provided to keep the disease in check from spreading further. Therefore, after reading the book, the reader is left with a new perspective to "look at the subtle, the hidden, and the unspoken" (Gladwell, 2002, pg. 80). Those things in everyday life that we would not normally think about as being epidemics are now taken under the microscope and analyzed. Through the work the reader learns to apply those concepts put forth by Gladwell to see if things like soap operas, game shows, magazines, and eating disorders can fit into the framework of what an epidemic is or is not and why certain things do become epidemics.…
