I. Objectives

At the end of this lesson students should be able to:
Identify sentence fragments, comma splices and fused sentences.
Identify fragments and their possible corrections.
Identify the difference between comma splices and fused sentences.
Know how to comma splices and fused sentences.

Faulty Sentence Structure
SENTENCE FRAGMENTS A sentence fragment is an incomplete sentence or a dependent clause punctuated as a sentence , beginning with a capital letter and ending with a period. For a group of words to be a complete sentence, it must have an independent clause with a subject and predicate. Steps to test sentence completeness:
1. Find the conjugated subject
2. Find the subject.
3. Look to see if the subject if the subject and the verb are introduced by a DANGER WORD. If this is so, the sentence is not complete.

Here are fragments and their possible corrections.
1. Fragment caused by a missing conjugated verb.
Fragment Elizabeth studying data processing.
Correct Elizabeth is studying data processing.
Fragment James has many varied interests. Such as swimming and playing tennis. (The first statement is a complete sentence, the second is a fragment because it has no verb)

2. Fragment caused by a missing subject.
Fragment Helplessly fell across the stage.
Correct The actress helplessly fell across the stage.
Fragment I have tried to talk to my mother. And understand her.
Correct I have tried to talk to my mother. I have tried all means understand her
You should always remember that the subject must be included in each sentence. However commands may be excluded. (The word you is still the understood subject when the person spoken to is addressed by name.) Correct Go home before the storm comes. Correct Run for your life!
3. Fragments caused by a danger word.
Fragment Because he was very persistent.
Fragment Before he jumped from the burning building.
Most commonly used danger words are: After unless who Although (though) how whom As (as if) when which Because where that Before while whoever If until whomever Since so that what, whatever

Do not avoid DANGER WORDS completely. When used correctly, they are excellent tools for writing complex sentence. Correct Because he was persistent, he was given a satisfactory answer.
Correct He grabbed the jewelry box before he jumped from the burning building.
COMMA SPLICES AND FUSED SENTENCES A comma splice results when a comma by itself joins independent clauses. The only time that a comma is correct between two independent clauses is when the comma is followed by a coordinating conjunction (and, but, for, or, nor, yet and so). The word splice means “to fasten ends together”. The end of one independent clause and the beginning of another cannot be fastened together with a comma alone. A fused sentence occurs when two independent clauses are not separated by punctuation or joined by a comma with a coordinating conjunction (and, but, for, or, nor, yet, and so). The word fused means “to unite as if by melting together”. Two independent clauses cannot be united as if melted together. A fused sentence is also known as run-on sentence.
Comma Splice My father thought I was a troublemaker, all he saw in the home was a little ugly boy who squirmed like an idiot and poked at the kids in the neighborhood.

How to correct Comma Splices and Fused Sentences
Use a period
My father thought I was a troublemaker. All he saw in the home was a little ugly boy who squirmed like an idiot and poked at the kids in the neighborhood.
Use a coordinating conjunction
My father thought I was a troublemaker, and all he saw in the home was a little ugly boy who squirmed like an idiot and poked at the kids in the neighborhood.
Make one clause subordinate by adding a subordinating conjunction.
Because all he saw in the home was a little ugly boy who squirmed like an idiot and poked at the kids in the neighborhood, my father thought I was a troublemaker.
Rewrite the clauses using a conjunctive adverb, either with a semicolon or as two separate sentences.
All he saw in the home was a little ugly boy who squirmed like an idiot and poked at the kids in the neighbourhood; consequently, father thought I was a troublemaker.

iii. Summary

Sentence fragment is an incomplete sentence or a dependent clause punctuated as a sentence, beginning with a capital letter and ending with a period.
Comma splices and fused sentences are errors that occur at the juncture of independent clause.
