Malo's 'After The Carnage'
Chapter Two
The Detonation/After the Carnage The day of the Carnage-Still a week earlier-Day One 8 p.m.
The Insurgents and their new ‘prisoners’.

“We are travellers. We will be staying for a few days. Ask all your people to come into the room.” The Chief spoke softly to the eldest male of the family.

He scanned the family members. The family members were quickly rounded up. It was an extended family. Two brothers with their families under one roof as per the custom of extended families. The Chief insurgent scanned them, looking for potential troublemakers. The four teenage boys were old enough to revolt against them. They seemed angry. The show of guns had subjugated the elders of the family and the womenfolk. It would not work on the hot-blooded youngsters.

“Malo, tie the boys down!” The order was a sharp contrast with the previous soft-spoken tone. The Chief did not want any more bloodshed. He had to assert himself as the dominant male.

Malo, the second in command nodded to his mate and both followed the order. The boys were securely tied to their beds and their bedroom doors and windows were secured and locked.

“Lock the girls in a bedroom.” The Chief ordered. The youngsters were out of harm’s way.

The room was now filled with six unshaven wet men, unrecognisable under the long hair, bulky clothes and scarves and the four elders of the family. The Chief looked at the two elderly men. They were in their mid 50’s. He barked another order to tie the fittest one. The family was now split and would not be able to do anything against them.

“Sir”, he addressed to the elder of the family, “we mean you no harm, but we need to stay for some days in your home. As long as we are safe here, so are you?” He softened his tone “Do you understand, what I am saying?”

“Yes”, the elderly man said.

“Please ask the ladies to cook us some food and then show my men where they can clean

This book takes the horrible story of September 11, 2001 to a new level of understanding. This changed my whole field- from watching and hearing about the horrible event on television- to actually getting the perspective from someone inside the flaming debris field. Every page is filled with a heart-pounding and a heart-wrenching moment. To have to choose one particular incident that stuck out to me the most would defiantly be hard to decide.…

The story ends ironically when the IRA sniper realizes that the enemy he killed was his own brother. But there are larger ironies here: first, that all of the sniper’s Free State enemies are, in a sense, his brothers, for they had been comrades in arms fighting for the same cause; second, that all men are brothers as descendants of Adam and Eve. When they fight, they become Cain and Abel. No doubt, the IRA sniper now wonders about the identities of the turret gunner, the old woman, and the person manning the machine gun.…

I had just arrived to my destination: Gallipoli, Turkey. As nervous as I was already with shivers down my spine nearly every minute I didn’t want to lose my young life tomorrow. It was a long ride but my troops and I were prepared for what could come our way. We jumped off the half sunken ship due to the enormous amount of soldiers. It was going to be a long and hard battle. The water we had to walk through to set up our camps was muddy and clumpy I was hoping I don’t get trench foot. Me, as the leader leaded on where we have to set up our camps. We set up our tents around the gruesome field of dead, yellow, sun dried grass next to the sandy rough hills. Rain had just started sprinkling and the next minute, hailing, it lit out our fire along with a deathlike thunderstorm. The dogs started howling under the glowing half-moon that gave us the only light left. I knew the next day only brought frightful visions of what will come to us tomorrow….…

Their lives, or as Coates says, bodies were being taken away from them by people in power, the dreamers. Being in the comfort of one’s home made you feel fear. “My father was so very afraid. I felt it in the sting of his black leather belt, which he applied with more anxiety than anger, my father who beat me as if someone might steal, me away, because that is exactly what was happening all around us” (Coates 16). Beats were a sign of discipline according to Coates.…

If he failed to do what he was asked his troops would kill every living thing in the town. He did not know how to explain to the boy’s parents what the colonel himself said. He was astonished and could not find the right words to say to explain a horrific crime. The families of the boys were extremely terrified and angry to know that they would not be able to do anything. Also, mentioning the tragic events where the military killed many people in Cuarto Pueblo, the massacre in Puento Alto, and all the things that the military has done to many boys. The only things that the family and boys wanted was hope and an answer to why all of this was happening. The five boys foreshadowed their death about to happen “Perhaps even now, the soldiers are here, up there in the hills already, watching and waiting to see what we will do!”(…
