The Sun is Still a Beautiful Star
With a beautiful mix of scenery and camera work, Mamamoo’s music video for ‘Starry Night’ creates an individual and aesthetic piece of art but it doesn’t quite match the criteria that the music sets.
Viewers can tell that Mamamoo went for a natural and raw music video and the group did a wonderful job making conveying that. One can observe this through the artistic shakiness of the camera and the lack of jump cuts - replaced by fluid pans from one scene to the next. This was shown during the first melody (not chorus) when the camera moved through the trees instead of switching frames - emphasising fluidity. This natural touch isn’t commonly seen in modern - especially pop - music videos which put more time and effort into making them seem visually perfect.
A show of their aesthetic abilities were their vast variety of attention getting sets like how there were both mountains and deserts to create diversity through the film. For example, the name of the motel in the music video was named Omelas. One might not think anything of this at first, but if you know the short story ‘Those Who Walk Away From Omelas’, the scene will have greater meaning. The short story is about a utopian town, Omelas, that can only thrive off of the misery of a single child. The inhabitants of this town ignore this child and either continue their perfect lives or ‘walk away’. The motel represents a sanctuary where everything seems perfect on the outside but isn’t so surface level - we can also notice the ‘no vacancy’ sign outside which has its own meaning. Long story short, if you don’t know of the short story, the beauty of this detail will pass you
