Man From The South
The story took place in Jamaica. The narrator was at a hotel and had just bought a beer and went to go relax by the pool and smoke some cigarettes, it was around six o'clock. “There were plenty of deck chairs around the swimming pool and there were white tables and huge brightly colored umbrellas and sunburned men and women sitting around in bathing suits.”(Dahl 1) There were men and women in and surrounding the pool having a great fun time. “The girls were English from the hotel. The boys I didn't know about, but they sounded American, and I thought they were probably naval cadets who'd came ashore from the U.S. naval training vessel that had arrived in harbor that moment.”(Dahl 1)
“I went over and sat down under a yellow umbrella where there were four empty seats, and I poured my beer and settled back comfortably with a cigarette.”(Dahl 1) The narrator became comfortable and began drinking and smoking. The narrator was delighted to be comfortably sitting under the nice sunshine drinking his beer, and smoking his tobacco. It was pleasant for the narrator to watch the girls and boys splashing about in the green water.
As the narrator was relaxing his eyes stumbled across an oddly looking man. “Just then I noticed a small, oldish man walking briskly around the edge of the pool. He was immaculately dressed in a white suit and he walked very quickly with a little bouncing strides, pushing himself high up on his toes with each step.”(Dahl 1) The man was walking along side the pool observing the people and the chairs. The oddly looking man came towards the narrator and gave him a smiled. “He stopped beside me and smiled, showing me two rows of very small, uneven teeth, slightly tarnished. Smiled back.”(Dahl 2)
The odd man asked the narrator if he could sit next to him/her. The narrator said go ahead. The odd man gave the chair a quick inspection with his eyes and decided it was
