The author hints that the old man is a angel; and because angels exhibit characteristics of an ideal human being, the author inadvertently suggests to the reader to base their way of showing love and affection off the way the old man shows love to Pelayo’s family. There are two main characteristics of love that the old man demonstrated that is also portrayed in the story of Jesus; the willingness to sacrifice and unconditional love. The willingness to sacrifice is the measure of how much a person values the relationship with their partner. Unconditional love shows that the reason you feel affection or feel the need to take care and protect is not compelled by the benefits or the gains you obtain from the partner.
