Management Lesson from the Movie - Catch Me If You Can
MANAGEMENT LESSONS FROM “CATCH ME IF YOU CAN”
Author - Sandesh Patil

NEVER GIVE UP, NEVER BACK DOWN!
“Two little mice fell in a bucket of cream. The first mouse quickly gave up and drowned. The second mouse, wouldn't quit. He struggled so hard that eventually he churned that cream into butter and crawled out. Gentlemen, as of this moment, I am that second mouse.” - Frank Abagnale Sr.

Carl Hanratty never gave up on his hunt for the culprit even after facing several embarrassing failures. His perseverance paid off and he was successful eventually.

Frank Abagnale Jr. was able to pull off all his cons because he was impeccably dressed for the occasion. E.g. He always used to dress like a pilot to en-cash his PanAM airline cheques. “Dress like you already have the job. Appearances can be deceiving, make people believe you deserve to be there.”

Frank Abagnale Sr. dressed like a rich businessman arranged for his son to be dressed as a chauffer and brought an expensive looking car to the bank. It made a good impression and made the manager of the largest bank in New York open the door for him.

Abagnale Jr. was just a 16 year old kid from the Bronx when he ran away from his home, never to return. He had never been on a plane and knew little about the banking system he was about to take on for the next 5 years. This wasn’t an overnight occurrence, it took time and lots of on the spot education, but if you never try you’ll never know.

CHANNELIZING THE SKILLS IN THE
RIGHT DIRECTION CAN DO WONDERS!

Carl Hanratty recognized the potential of Frank’s skills, which he had been using for the wrong deeds and he used the same skills to help the FBI in prevention of counterfeiting of cheques.

PRESENCE OF MIND

Carl Hanratty almost got his hands on Frank , but Frank’s quick-thinking helped him escape from his predicament. On being caught by Carl Hanratty, Frank pretended to

Literature in any form was something that seemed to bring Frank comfort and enjoyment. Once he said that Shakespeare was like having jewels in his mouth. The words of books had more meaning to Frank than most would have gotten out of it. Books allowed Frank to go off to different places. “It’s lovely to know the world can’t interfere with the inside of your head”. (202) They allowed much time to pass and gave him things to think and dream. Yet while he was still poverty stricken and adults wanted to rule his whole life, including his mind, he always had what he has learned and the stories he read kept to himself that no one could take away.
