SUGGESTIONS FOR IMPROVING YOUR READING SPEED*

Speed Reading is a method of improving reading ability, enhancing both the speed at which a text can be assimilated, and the level of understanding of the material.

Rapid reading, effective reading, reading dynamics, quicker reading, faster reading, speed learning, power reading, reading genius, photo reading all these titles have been used to describe techniques for speed reading.

Applying speed-reading techniques gives the following benefits:
• Large volumes of information can be assimilated rapidly
• By reading faster and absorbing more information into short-term memory, the meaning and structure of a document is easier to see.
• Your eyes have to do less work, meaning that reading for long periods can be less tiring.
The average college student reads between 250 and 300 words per minute on fiction and non-technical materials. Good reading speed is around 500 to 700 words per minute.

An efficient speed-reader can read comfortably at speeds of between 800 to 1000 words per minute without any constant practice or drilling. Tutored speed-readers, who constantly practice the skill over long periods of time, can reliably achieve speeds of around 5000 words per minute. Natural speed-readers can exceed these speeds.

Speed-reading enhances the enjoyment of reading by allowing greater concentration and lesser reading irritations.

Anyone can improve his or her current reading speed. There is no IQ and age level required for speed-reading.

You do not need to constantly practice the speed-reading technique. You can simply apply the technique in your daily reading.

Internal rate adjustment involves selecting differing rates for parts of a given article. In general, decrease speed when you find the following:-
1. Unfamiliar terminology not clear in context. Try to understand it in context at that point; otherwise, read on and return to it later.
2. Difficult sentence and paragraph structure;

Members of the Evelyn Wood Reading Program make it their goal to teach others how to at least double their reading rate, increase understanding, concentration and overall assist the student understanding good methods for note-taking, test-taking, and studying. They begin with sub-vocal linear reading, and progress to efficiently flying through the material in an orderly fashion and continue to add reading exercises to increase the reader’s average words-per-minute. The author, Stanley D. Frank, encourages the reader to find a quiet setting in which he/she can concentrate well, along with arranging schedules to follow, and setting aside small study sessions after setting a personalized goal for the project. Logical notes can be achieved by recall patterns, which allow organization by creating patterns from the key concepts, important words, and information taught. Along with note-taking, supersonic reading is highly encouraged by reading only with the eyes, understanding the big pictures, and using underlining to read faster and decrease other distractions. In order to write a paper with supersonic writing, the instructors of the Evelyn Wood program encourage writers to carefully organize their information before writing the first and final draft. The Evelyn Wood program takes into account that test-taking is just as important as swift reading and writing. They assist readers in…

Understanding the text, additionally makes you comprehend the information and ask questions. If you read a lot, you probably have a thinking mindset. A mindset is the kind of attitude you have. "Mindsets are just beliefs They're powerful beliefs" (Dweck 16). If you believe you reading is not a necessity, then your mindset will change. You won't think as much. If you continuously read "the habit spurs your brain to think and concentrate" (Gelman 1). Without reading, you won't think as much. Reading causes you to ask questions about what will happen and wonder why someone acted the way they did. Montag, from Fahrenheit 451, doesn't read over an extended amounts of time so he doesn't observe his surroundings and doesn't think. "'Bet I know something…

Ways to assist Ayden’s reading speed include increasing classroom modeled reading and shared reading. According to Tompkins (2014), teachers provide the greatest amount of support when they demonstrate how expert readers read. By reading at the appropriate pace and expression, Ayden could read along and observe how the prosody and expression with which his teacher reads. Shared reading would also be a useful strategy, as it allows students to interact with the reading and requires students to follow along while the teacher. To start the literacy learner study, the student completed an oral reading fluency assessment. This was completed using DIBELS Next (Dynamic Measurement Group, 2013). This student read 22 words per minute with 73% accuracy. According to the DIBELS report, this student requires intensive instruction and scored in red on the assessment. Because the student scored in red, he had to complete an Informal Phonics Inventory (McKenna & Stahl, 2008, p. 125-131). This assessment’s data reveals the areas of strengths and weaknesses of the student’s phonics skills. Using the results from these assessments helped to determine the literacy learner’s independent, instructional, and frustration reading levels (Morris, 2014a). Knowing and understanding these levels helps to guide instructional design and implementation of effective and appropriate activities.…

Fluency is” a measure of the reader’s competence at decoding and recognizing sight words with automaticity at a specified reading level” (Pennington, 2013). It is believed that the higher the level of fluency, the higher the level of comprehension. Fluency involves three major areas: intonation, pacing, and phrasing. Intonation is the pattern of pitch change when reading a passage. It allows the audience to tell when there’s excitement or even a question. Pacing is the speed in which the student reads a given passage, and phrasing allows the student to use “meaning and structure sources of information” to help them solve problems as they are reading (Reading Recovery, n.d.). For the purpose of this task, I will describe a three-day literacy unit including the strategies, activities, and the reason for both.…

Reading has always been a tedious task for me; I could never focus on the material. Reading the material at least three times was a minimum to get anything out of it. I have found the key is to be remotely interested in the material. When I joined the military in 2001, I had to start reading all the Air Force Instructions (AFI) to learn how I was supposed to conduct myself on a daily basis. There are literally thousands upon thousands of AFIs published, and many, but not all, of them applied to me. I was able to…

Reading may take too much time, like if you want to hang out with friends, it may take too much time up. It also might not be visually appealing, like it might not look like something that you would want to read. Do you ever want to read, but you can’t because your book would take to long to read? Also, After all, playing suspenseful music when someone is walking down a corridor can put the audience on the edge of their seats more acutely than can reading about descriptions of the eerie corridor. This would not be a good reason because reading can help you physically and mentally. To conclude, reading every day may not be the best for…

Helping students increase they fluency words per minutes (WPM) can have a variety of methods that can be used. One method that can be used to increase students WPM accuracy when reading is repeated reading. Repeated reading is when students read a passage multiple times (Vaugh & Boss, 2015, p. 227). Reading a book doesn’t shrivel up the brain like watching a movie would do. Our minds are restricted when watching something; movies do all of the thinking and imagination for us. When someone reads, their brain is exercising from all the thinking that’s happening. Instead of staring at the computer screen, reading increases one's vocabulary and writing skills. Whenever I stumble over an unfamiliar word, I jot it down, look it up, and add it to my mental dictionary.…

Reading comprehension is defined as the level of understanding of a text/message. This understanding comes from the interaction between the words that are written and how they trigger knowledge outside the text/message. Proficient reading depends on the ability to recognize words quickly and effortlessly. If word recognition is difficult, students use too much of their processing capacity to read individual words, which interferes with their ability to comprehend what is read. The ability to read provides academic success as well as success throughout life (Irlen, 1991). A skillful reader will sustain two major reading characteristics. One is the speed and ease at which they read the text. The other is the understanding and internalizing of the text being read (Jager-Adams, 1994). Ouellette (2006) states “reading does not only involve decoding and visual word recognition: The end goal is comprehension” (p. 556). Over the years, the use of color for visually enhancing a person’s reading ability has undergone a transformation from the use of colored chalk on chalkboards to using black ink on colored paper. Using colored paper for the background of a text may enhance the eye’s ability to focus and adhere to the print at hand. The ability of the eyes to perceive color and color hues vary from person to person and are individually specific with regard to optimal color interpretation (Evans, 1974).…
