Steve Lopez and his exemplary column writing, which is recognized by a Pulitzer prize, makes readers of all ages ask how and why as they devour his richly written columns. In his columns for the Los Angeles Times, Lopez skillfully employs use of metaphors and juxtaposition among other devices to provoke his readers’ thoughts and exaggerate his often humorous or light hearted interpretations of the city that he lives in and the people who maintain it. With these techniques he hooks his readers on his writing style and keeps them coming back for more interesting comparisons and metaphors that describe the world around them.…
4) Next identify the intended audience for the image/video and analyze whether or not the ways in which the argument that the media makes is uniquely fit for that particular audience. Audience analysis: The target audience for this summary is an ENGL101 student at the University of Maryland who is studying Mass Communications. This student has not previously read this article. From television to magazines the mass media is all around us, silently shaping society. Many people do not realize how much media can influence how they view the world. Children are the most vulnerable to the media’s influence. Through their daily consumption of television, literature, and culture, their cultural lens is being formed. Some influences the media have are unintentional however; many individuals are using the influence of media to shape generations. An example of an individual is the world-renown author Dr. Seuss. This man did more than write books that purely entertained children. When looking into his stories one can find that he addressed a social issue in most of his stories. He used his creative and unusual style of writing to slyly influence the life of children for generations. One of his more blatantly sociological books was The Star-Bellied Sneetches and Other Stories. Later becoming a movie, this story told a tale of seemingly naive creatures that learned tolerance. However, when taking a closer look, one can there is so much more being revealed. In Dr. Seuss’ The Star-Bellied Sneetches and Other Stories he addresses the issue of social stratification and unknowingly reinforces its importance to the flow of a society.…
The Onion’s article “Revolutionary New Insoles Combine Five Forms of Pseudoscience”, sound like the script to a typical television commercial. The article talked about shoe insoles that “Establish a correspondence between every point on the human foot, with another part of the body, enabling their soles to heal their entire bodies as they walk.” They also talked about “scientific-sounding “information supporting their new insoles. I have seen commercials for shoe insoles on television that sound just like this. How are we to know that the scientific jargon that they throw into these commercials is accurate? These persuasion techniques seem to work, or else they would not sell any products. In the article, there was a woman who talked about wearing the insoles for seven weeks after having twisted her ankle, and now it has remarkable healed, with no pain while she walks. I have sprained my ankles many times, and the doctors there, always told me that it would take six to eight weeks to heal, so with this in mind, the woman’s foot would have been completely healed. People who have never sprained an ankle, or had another similar injury, would not know that this is the approximate healing time, so they would believe the woman, and probably think she is a reliable witness as to how well the insoles work. Keeping this in mind, we should not believe television commercials just because they might sound scientifically correct. Do some research or ask someone who knows before committing to buying a product that you are not sure about.…

The target audience for this article would be individuals that take an interest in war and the lives of soldiers on missions. I would write my summary to target those individuals to encourage or discourage them to read or not read the article written by Tim O’Brien. The audience cannot be defined by age, gender, and backgrounds or educational level because it could be a wide range of individuals that take notice of the writing for different purposes. The audience may know about the topic discussed in the article if they are familiar with the offer but on the other hand someone like me that is not familiar with this specific author and writing style I do not know anything about his work or the article read. Some may not support war so they may be more apt to not continue reading after a short introduction of the topic. Others may really enjoy the topic discussed because to their interest in the war, soldiers and the author’s works. I feel as if the audience is distant with this reading. I could not relate to topic and it did not draw me in and make me feel as if I was right there in the action. I would play the role of a spectator because I did not feel that the reading affected me the way it would others and make them feel as if they were right there with the individuals in the reading.…

An interesting title for an interesting article about your favorite music group or an even that you attended steals your attention and just be reading the first few lines makes you want to keep on reading and reading. When I flip open the newspaper section, I immediately turn to the entertainment section knowing that there must be an article of amusement that will give me something to think and talk about. Same with the stories that we hear from friends. Gossip. You hear a bit of a story being told to another and you immediately jump in asking the questions "who? What?" These types of things get our attention and just the way we hear about it changes our thoughts and feelings. What good is a section of a story when you must know the whole thing to spread on the story? Hearing two different stories makes you change your mind back and forth until you are too confused to care or another hot new story arrives to the ears of a fellow friend who will pass it down to you.
